    Re: AMD - Piledriver chitchat

I don't think HT is likely to be that much of a bottleneck, tbh. I believe AMD currently limit their HT link to 3.0 spec for ~ 10.4GB/s bandwidth (2.6GHz on a 16bit link), while PCIe 2.0 x16 can push 8GB/s. But they could easily release a new set of chipsets with full 3.1 spec (3.2GHz) to boost the link to ~12.8GB/s. PCIe 3.0 x16 will exceed that bandwidth (16GB/s), but given the PCIe 2.0 x16 bandwidth isn't really a bottleneck to graphics card, I don't think it'll make a noticeable difference. It's just a shame they chose a 16bit link in the first place: if they'd gone with a lower clocked 32bit link they'd be fine for years to come

Shoddy reviewing by the Anandtech team - either do it properly or don't do it at all... *sigh*

Trying some cross-review comparisons with the Tom's GT640 review, it looks like the 5570 in Anandtech's preview is probably a DDR3 version. The thing is the 6670 DDR5 and GT640 are very inconsistent when compared to each other; with each coming out significantly on top in different games. The fact that the 5800k comes out consistently behind the GT640 means it probably isn't quite up to 8800GT levels yet, no doubt down to memory limitations (and perhaps a narrow back end - anyone know how the ROP count compares to 5670/6670?).
Don't forget the 640 on Anandtech was benched using an i7-3960X @ 4.3GHz. If you slapped the 384 Trinity shaders on to that instead of the mediocre piledriver cores it would blow past the 640.

*shrug* like I said, it's hard to be sure with the shoddy previewing. Hopefully we'll see Hexus and other decent sites doing a full testing using Trinity as the base platform for testing a number of discrete GPUs as well as the IGP. It's so frustrating to know that the reviews are about to come out though - I want to know everything *now* godsdammit

A video made by some of the people over at the OcUK store showing an A10 5800K running BL2:

It looks like Trinity will be out for sale too. Supposedly, the A10-5800K overclocks a decent amount too.

It seems the HD7660D really can take advantage of faster RAM:

    http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/gra...s_8.html#sect0

1866MHZ or 2000MHZ DDR3 RAM seems to be the ideal speed to use IMHO.

I suppose one thing to take into consideration is that this Christmas, you can build something that's going to cost less than a Wii U and have the legs to outlast it.

    http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1766/11/

The FX4100 runs at between 3.6GHZ to 3.8GHZ and the A8 5600K at between 3.6GHZ and 3.9GHZ,so it appears at least for 3DMark Vantage the IPC increase is around 10% or thereabouts.

It seems that review uses an HD6570 GDDR5 which is around HD5670 GDDR5 level. With some faster RAM and an overclock on the IGP,you could be hitting the level of the two previous cards in many games.

Dang, when you put it like that AMD really are on for a winner. Just need a partnership with Steam to roll out their Linux based OS and get little boxes under everyone's telly soon. That's going to shake up the console market!

    Re: AMD - Piledriver chitchat

If AMD could of released these CPUs before I went to University I would of had a tough choice to make, their timing was bad though.

I hope their APUs are successful because they deserve it but AMD aren't helping themselves by releasing the desktop parts so late or by their silly request for reviewers to produce GPU results first.

I'm following this very closely. Most of my work is on FEA simulations, so strong multi-threaded performance is what I need, and AMD seems to be doing pretty good there with the 8 core CPU's.

Currently running a 6 core phenom, and sims take too long

Well Sony seem to be going that way:

Not by Christmas though, so not going to cancel my Wii-U pre order jst yet

A10-5800K overclocked to 5.1GHZ although voltage seems quite high:

    http://www.criminalcafe.com/showthre...7.3GHz-no-LN2&

It seems the 4 thread Turbo Boost clockspeeds is 4GHZ. The score at this clockspeed in CB 11.5 is the same as a Core i3 3220.

    The 4.2GHZ to 4.3GHZ FX4170 scores 3.19:
