Essentially a decision to go B550/Zen 3 means any upgrade to a new architecture requires new CPU, motherboard and RAM. Waiting for Zen 4 in 2022 means paying through the nose for memory.

It's not an easy decision. If I personally had a 1700x and x370 I would not even consider the B550 until the Zen 3 equivalent comes out and see how it performs for real. If it does hit the rumored 20% uplift and that 20% were to apply to my specific workloads I'd just save the money on a new motherboard and also get the cheaper 3700x
The thing is I can see Zen4 is on 5NM and might double the core count,so even if works with DDR4,I can see a real issue with memory bandwidth.

So AMD doing this stunt with B550,makes it essentially another limited chipset. I also don't trust them to not release an X670....then proceed to make up some excuse why X570 motherboards don't work fully. I really hope AMD doesn't pull the whole Zen2 clockspeed bump,as being only for B550 and X570,because that would be taking the mickey.

Indeed. The 3950x seems to behave a little memory bandwidth starved already. 3900x seems to be the high end sweet spot.

    Re: AMD - Zen chitchat

It can depend on the application, with some being more memory-hungry than others. The creator of y-cruncher has made some interesting blog posts about this, especially when using AVX instructions, even on server platforms with many channels of RAM. http://www.numberworld.org/y-crunche....html#2018_7_2

So I could get a X470 or B450 and still get to use Zen 3?

    Re: AMD - Zen chitchat

From my understanding of the post, it's a possibility, but has some limitations. If you don't already have a 400 series board, a 500 series would probably be a safer bet IMO.

I would just wait for a B550 motherboard.

I think more than the B450 IMHO,but some of the leaked models, have X570 level VRMs.

The Ryzen 3 3300X when tuned does very well in WoW.

Hmm, more 3000 chips, Wonder if this was part of the reason to stop supporting B450 if it had more 3000 series parts to fit in that rom.

Was just listening to a GN video on responses from AMD about the whole B450 AM4 thingy, IDK AMD had gone on record saying AM4 is going to be with us until DDR5, if that's delayed it would be nice as i could get more than 2 generations out of my X570.
