    A friend has got all the games on his Steam account. We have selected the option back-up games and choosen the 4 games but the file only comes to about 4gb. Is this the right way to do it to get it installed on my machine?

    it's one way, but not the way most people recommend, as it can go wrong - on the bright side though, it DOES compress things down a bit. takes ages at the other end though.

    the other option is, as stated, to copy the .gcf files from c:\program files\steam\steamapps

    Got the .gcf files from the games now so see how it works. He did have other files in there as well that seemed to be general ones, like soundsource.gcf or something similar. Didn't copy them across, if I need them I can d/l a few files no problem
