    Half Life Woes

I got half life (the original) last week. I just decided to install it now, which seems to have worked well, but ingame, I'm having problems with the graphics. After the valve logo think (the guy with a valve in his eye), I get a sort of flashing effect. It only happens while playing, and on the main menu.

The whole screen doesn't flash, and not all the time either. It's about 2-3 cm horizontally over different regions of the screen. there's about 2 flashed every second.

Does anyone know how to get rid of them? (I'm using the system that's in my sig at 1024x768 - is that too high?)

Another small thing is that if I press escape whilst in game, then click resume game, it comes up with this:
    v45 1.1.0.8

The audio in game still happens, but I get no visual for a few seconds. Maybe it's supposed to happen, maybe not - I don't know.

One last thing - might have just been a flukey glitch (one off). After the tran ride in black mesa, as guard opens a door. I walked through. When the next dooor opened, I seemed to just be stuck to the side to the room, and could move. Like I said - it might have been a one off thing. I'll try again later.

Get the latest version of Half Life for starters, and latest graphics drivers. Latest (and last) HL version being 1.1.1.0 I believe.
To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.

AFAIK, I have got the lastest of both. Although, I tried to update HL by clicking on update, and it said I have the latest one, which I though was strange since it was released a good fw years ago.

For a graphics update, I'll check now, but I only got the card a few month ago, and since then it's been updated.

Can you not just insert the H-L cd key and register it with valve and download the game off steam.I know its a chew but that's what I did.I haven't installed H-L on this windows install but I did register the cd key and I can play the game.I can't play H-L:Source tho.

How do you insert a CD key in valve?
I just clicked on Browse games and it gave me the option to "Registar a Product".Then I just typed in my H-L cd key.

Nevermind. I found it. It's updating now - should be done in about 10mins.

I'm surprised how much stuff you get with HL that you got to pay for with HL2. I haven't even heard of richochet!

I just updated, and all the flickering stopped it's not a perfect picture. Thanks everyone for that. 1 major and 1 minor problem though.

    Minor:
There's a "static" noise coming from my speakers underneath the game noise. This could be because they're naff speakers (they are), but it hasn't happened in any other game so far. So I think it's either a problem with HL or something buzzing against the speakers, but I don't think that's likely TBH.

    Major:
It crashed half way though the train ride. I'll try again in a bit.

Try changing the Rendering mode, if its on D3D changeover to OpenGL or vice versa. Had a problem with this when I first purchased it a few years back, felt like I was skating on ice when I had it running in D3D, done the changeover and it was fine.

Unplug the speakers and clean the jack then back in for the static you could try.

I was about to send this:
It didn't crash. It just takes a REALLY long time to load when it says "loading please wait". Is there anyway to reduce these loading times as I really don't want to play this if I have to wait about 2 minutes just for it to load every now and then.

Thanks for the advise - I changed it to D3D, and now it loads a lot quicker. I'll clean the jacks maybe tomorrow.

Question that's totally unrelated to help:
I've heard that when you press a button, a lift goes flying past with passengers on. I've already pressed the button, and those people sadly died . What would have happened if I DIDN'T press the button?
