    BioShock installation woe

Or to be more exact Games for Windows and online activation is a crap idea.

    Put BioShock DVD in drive
    Choose Install
5 minutes later all done the game just needs to connect to the internet site
Game can't connect because the site is swamped by people installing BioShock and connecting to activate
After 20 minutes of futile waiting press 'Cancel' then the game uninstalls itself.!!!

Net result - no game to play, no idea when I will be able to play.

Are you EU based? If so I don't believe the activation servers are live until tomorrow (that being the release date)

    Re: BioShock installation woe

I'm in the same boat, and it's a disgrace.

The bit it needs the internet for, (as well as the activate bit) is a part of the install which looks for a server to download the latest patch - is there one?!

Anyway,as Hottentot says above, you can't install or play the game until this happens. Add crashes, no widescreen FOV etc. and I am not a happy bunny.

    Re: BioShock installation woe

I don't think that anyone in Europe can play Bioshock until tomorrow anyway becauase it hasn't actually been released over here yet. At least on PC.

    Re: BioShock installation woe

In all the years never heard of this. So what do review do (who have a retail)? Yes, it does happen. Does anyone know if this is true?

    Re: BioShock installation woe

This sucks - it's the new Securom protection which requires online authentication It also restricts you to two installs (don't forget to uninstall it or..) too.

What time does steam activate? It's quite late 2morrow if I remember right - let's hope that's not the case for retail copies.

    God bless copy protection eh?

Stupid stupid people. My copy arrive 2morrow - I wonder if activation will come online before the crack does?

If what's true? It's not released in Europe until 24th August.

As for review I suspect there will have been review copies without this limitation...

Apparently securom is also present if you buy via steam..

Not that I could - it wouldn't let me preload yesterday so i ordered a copy from play.com this morning.

    Oh no.

From what I'm reading on the 2kgames forums, the Securom rootkit gets installed with the PC demo as well. God damnit. sigh.

    "it basically IS a rootkit"
"it's horribly invasive. Almost makes Starforce look friendly"

Depends who you talk to - Sophos don't class it as a rootkit, but I think MS do. It's nothing like as bad as Starforce though.

Securom's site say it's a suite of services and state no rootkit is used. However, since it does seek to hide itself, installs silently and (apparently) doesn't disappear when the game is uninstalled then rootkit it is. I'll be applying rootkit revealer and investigating..

    Re: BioShock installation woe

I read on the 2k forums that a lot of euros are buying the game today, even although the release date isn't until tomorrow.

And that a lot of them are trying to activate it but can't. And although some say that is just because its not the 24th yet... someone at 2k evidently said its because the server is having problems. Whether that means its having problems and may be fixed and then you will be able to activate it today.. I dont know.
