Going for a Song - Classic Musical Interludes in Gaming

Having recently played through Portal, I thought it was worth taking a moment to reflect on music in games - oft-overlooked, especially by PC gamers with MP3 collections. Which games deserve special praise for their musical contributions? Share your favorites, with links where possible! Here are a few of my top picks:

    Stay Alive - Jonathan Coulton
    Portal (PC) by Valve
Well, let's start at the end. Portal's end credits include a comedy song of epic proportions, sung sweetly by Portal's sinister cake-obsessed AI. Portal is a rare breed - a 2-hour game not only filled with puzzles, but filled with comedy, and the song at the end is a perfect exclamation point to what happened before it. There are videos up on YouTube, but generally, I'd recommend buying and playing the game though to the end to experience the song as intended

    That's Death - Eric Idle
Discworld 2 (PC) by Perfect Entertainment
Once upon a time, PC gamers had games based on using their brains rather than just twitch-gaming, and the point & click was a prime example of this. The Discworld games were well regarded, if obscenely cruel in the puzzle department at times. But this little song at the start of Discworld 2 is completely unnecessary - but enormously fun. Comedy legend Eric Idle was the voice of Rincewind in the games, and was perfectly placed to write the song.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past; End Credits theme - Koji Kondo
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES) by Nintendo
I don't know what it is about this one, but it's my absolute favorite from the 8 or 9 Zelda games I've played. I love the orchestral feel to it, the real sense of emotion in it, and yes I know it's done with synths, but that's how it feels. Koji Kondo's comp[osed an enormous amount of classic game music, and this track is what I feel to be his finest work.

To Far Away Times - Yasunori Mitsuda (start playback 55 seconds in)
    Chrono Trigger (SNES) by Squaresoft
Those who know me well know my views on the Final Fantasy series, including the revered FF7: Light years away from Square's finest work. Chrono Trigger is their finest work. It's mighty fine. And this, the end-credit theme, makes it all the better. It's got everything a good ending-song song needs - a strong beat, heavy reference to what's happened before it, and I love the introduction of the ticking clock from the title screen towards the end.

Katamari on the Rocks - Yu Miyake
    Katamari Damacy (PS2) by Namco
The Katamari games are a symphony of strangeness, a bizarre, inexplicable chunk of Japanese weirdness that you either love or hate. The intro does a pretty good job of summing up how the game, and the all-important sounds, progress - where the singers listed for a track on the second game's soundtrack include Bigmouth the Duck and Booby the Pig. It's really hard to pick a "best" track for this game, nay the entire series, but the intro is certainly something you'll recognize everywhere.
Na na, na na na na na na na! Katamari Damacy!

cool - I used to love computer music, I used to spend a lot of time ripping the .mods from Amiga games and just listening to them

    Favourites at the moment are
    Fable Oakvale theme

    Jade Empire
Main theme, I couldn't find a link to a sample of the music

    LocoRoco
I've never played this game, but I just love this music - its crazy!!

Red Alert 2 - Hell March
Nothing gets the blood pumping in C&C like this music

Re: Going for a Song - Classic Musical Interludes in Gaming

    Kameo: Elements of power
    -Into The Light (Steve Burke)
Its only about 2 minuites long and you only hear it when you die, but its really touching.
The entire soundtrack is superb. Steve Burke has done a brilliant job. One of my favourite game musicians

    Gears of War
-Train Wreck (Kevin Riepl) & Gears of War (same)
The first track really sets the scene, very fast paced, trying to rush through the train.
The second is the theme for the game thats used a few times.
Train Wreck: YouTube - Train Wreck-Locust Theme
Theme: YouTube - Gears of War Main Theme

    Final Fantasy 7 (yeah yeah)
    - Aeris theme & On that day 5 years ago (Nobuo Uematsu)
If anyone has heard the orchestrated piece of the Aeris theme by the Philharmonic Orchestra (I dont think the one linked is by them).....tell me it didn't bring a tear. Its beautiful.
The second one is one ive always liked
YouTube - Tour de Japon - Aerith's Theme

    Dune: Emperor
-Ride the worm (Multiplayer music for House Atreides) - Don't know the artist
One of the best fitting music tracks for a RTS game I've come across. Not only did it give a sense of speed, it gave you a feeling of the desert too.

    Unreal (1)
-Shared Dig (Alexander Brandon or/and Michiel van den Bos - not 100% sure)
Gives a real feeling of struggle and the hell that is to come. First real FPS I played and its stayed with me to this day
    YouTube - 05 - Shared Dig

I'm sure I will think of more

Only just bothered getting round to completing HL2 , and swiftly looked up the soundtrack to that. Wish the tracks were longer though

I'm really liking the Halo music at the moment. It's bizarre, I don't really rate the games that highly but I love everything else about the series.

Halo 3 theme tune YouTube - Halo 3 Theme

And this piece of Chopin is for the Believe advert rather than the game, but I think it's marvellous YouTube - Halo 3 "Believe" in HD

Re: Going for a Song - Classic Musical Interludes in Gaming

The Witcher has some great background themes, but it's just beaten by Gothic 3 which has some amazing symphonic scores - the credits music in particular is almost tear jerking. It's a bit too much for the game though

Going way back, the completion/end credits music from Another World was my favourite for a long time.

HL2 has some very high fidelity and atmospheric music.. it's just too short and way too rare

Re: Going for a Song - Classic Musical Interludes in Gaming

Quake 3 soundtrack, some classics in there. (think it might have been done by Trent Reznor)

and of course the very 80's, but very addictive MGS theme tune.

I think the music from final fantasy eight is superb especially lagunnas battle theme, eda battle theme, breezy beats. The black mages force your way is my favorite song from the game

YouTube - The Black Mages - Force Your Way (Live) linky to said song performed live.

In my opinion all the battle music from the final fantasy games from the first to the newest one is superb.
