    Re: Spore!

got tired of it when i reached the space stage. its incredibly linear and shallow in actuality but parading as something very open ended. i guess playing it more than once would be like watching the same movie over and over again but the cast are wearing different clothes...

    Re: Spore!

Seemed like a kids game to me. Not terrible, just not really something I think would suit most people. It's basically 5 mini games:

    1) Cell stage - 2D like a Flash game you can get on the net for free. Very shallow, very simplistic, and over in about 10 minutes. Shame too because it could have been fun if it wasn't so insanely simplified.

    2) Creature stage - the best stage in the game imo, and yet still incredibly shallow. Imagine a kind of single player World of Warcraft, but in one zone, and limited to level 3 maximum...

    3) Tribe stage - the worst stage of them all imo. Can't even be bothered explaining it, it's just rubbish.

    4) Civlisation stage - a ridiculously shallow RTS with just 3 unit types and a bunch of pre-made cities that you capture and then building is basically just placing one of the 3 building types on one of about half a dozen plots, and then you never even look at the city again. Like a half arsed RTS. I've played budget RTS's from unknown companies that come and go like a fad, and yet are better than this.

    5) Space stage - a shallow kind of Elite type game, trading (Zzz), and quests - mostly of the fed ex variety.

Do yourselves a favour, get a turn based strategy game or an RTS instead. Then buy X2, or X3, or Space Rangers 2, or get dos box and load up Frontier: Elite 2 / or 3. It would probably be fun for children though. It's almost like a simplified introduction into gaming. Maybe early teens. But just bear in mind that it has far less depth than SimCity 2000, and even that I personally always wished that it had more 'stuff'.

Having said all that, some older people loved The Sims, so they might like this. Although, I still wouldn't even be sure about that because although The Sims was basically a virtual dolls house, it's at least one full game, where as Spore is like 5 unfinished games. This was all my opinion =P

p.s. And my little brat sister is 15 and she didn't like it either, but she doesn't like anything.

    Re: Spore!

I installed it last night and have played the cell stage. Mouse control in this section annoyed me as I didnt seem to have much sway on where my chap went. Started the next stage and killed the first thing I saw whichw as fun I turned off then cos I had to get sleep for work but I like it so far. the graphics are pretty good and I am looking forward to getting further into teh game

    Re: Spore!

I think some people are sort of missing the point. Will Wright was right about this one, hype is bad - everyone expected (including myself) that it was going to be every single game in one and it'd be uber amazing and so on. However, from a few days playing i've moved from "well that was great, but oh wait.. it was actually dull as hell" to "wow this is actually pretty impressive".

It's not meant to be every game in one. It's about evolution, and it does that pretty well i think. The idea isn't supposed to be to look at each stage as a whole game, that's just not fair on Spore, think about it as a whole. By the time you get to the space age the fun isn't in the trading, or in the missions, but simply the scales involved.

I mean you can travel to the centre of the galaxy, colonising as you go, perhaps the most powerful part of the game is terraforming and sculpting planets as you see fit. There are all the little bits like making the ecologies work, you can evolve new species and advance their knowledge and so on. There's even a pretty good achievement system. And the scale is just staggering. When you get the mission to "find the Grox" you can either fly to the centre of the galaxy, or try to find a shortcut through black holes - i tried the first. And it's ridiculous how there are quite literally thousands of stars, each with a fair few planets (to the extent that your travel range decreases near galactic centre because the stars are so densely packed).

This doesn't even go on to the creator aspect of it. There's a lot of credit due to the designers for this, the amount of customisation available is very very impressive especially given that the engine can handle just about anything.

My thoughts on the stages are..:

Cell - good fun, like Flow as most people say, nice level of customisation, but a tad short.
Creature - this is also a nice stage, probably one of the better pre-space stages. not too long and not too short, and you also get an idea of the many different creatures that you can encounter.
Tribal - ech, this was a bit crap, not much going on and this one is a bit shallow.
Civilisation - mixed about this one. It's alright mucking around with the editors, but once you get air power, you're basically indestructible.

Space - worth it for the rest of the game to be honest. It's like you've been going through a 2mm pipe and you end up at a river mouth, that's the level of "new stuff you can play with" that happens. (Digerati's got it right on this one)

My point on this one is that Spore is not a "hardcore" game. It's not meant to be about RTS's or RPG's, if you're trying to do that then you're trying too hard It was always meant to be about evolution and it did good in my eyes.

As a question though, is there a way to get fleets? Like when you get attacked, the enemy always has a few spaceships and then 3 or 4 smaller ships for each one as support. And when you to try to bomb the crap out of someone else, all you get is your measly 3 or 4 alliance ships which get slaughtered so quickly.

    Re: Spore!

As another question: Is it only activation which REQUIRE internet?

I'm aware that if I don't have internet connection I can't get new content and the like, but I reckon for a quick play through once or twice I can live with only a few species. Is it worth me nicking an internet connection for all of 5 minutes (my brother has his own which could be "requisitioned" breifly if I ask nicely) to get Spore activated or do you have to have online permamently?

    Re: Spore!

Personally, (and rather disappointingly), I've found the game to be bland and superficial.

Once you get past the 'Ooh, I can make him walk on 9 legs!' wow-factor, there's realisation that the way your creature looks has no bearing on the game whatsoever; ergo the evolutionary path is moot. Which is a good job, however, since you can't feasibly create a species which is both (a) good stats-wise, and (b) anything other than hideously ugly, due to the lack of suitable body parts.

Perseverance just makes the gameplay failings more apparent. As I'm a bit old-school like, I'm comparing tribal stage with Populous, Civilisation with SimCity, and Space with Alpha Centauri... sure they're less pretty, but Spore looks like a toy in comparison.

Maybe I'll come back to it in a few weeks and discover some genius, as Whiternoise did above, but I think I might have my hands too full with Populous to care...

    (PS... hello?)

I found it quite fun and (very) amusing until i got to space - where it became some horrible grind-fest with all the cuteness sucked out of it. Damn.

I might go back to it to make the obligatory penis-monster but that's about it.

From what I've read, it's the activation online that only accumulates - uninstalling the game does not decrement the count.
So once it has been activated 3 times the servers will start rejecting the key and you need to phone EA to get another activation.

This is just from comments I have read, nothing official to confirm this - and I have no idea if it is "up to 3 simultaneous activations in a given time period" and they atrophy over a few months (that would be enough to deter pirating the key).
