Yes, agree, especially with deus ex 2 - what a horrible sequel to a fantastic, original game, such a shame.Originally Posted by Devilbod
I'd agree that there's not a great deal of "great" PC games around at the moment, but there have been, and there probably will be more of them...I see these lists of classic console games, and they're all good, but what I notice is that I can name a similar number of pc games that I consider to be classics - yeah, there's a lot of pap on market for the pc, but when these consoles were around a great deal of pap floated around then, too.
C&C (original, or gold)
Dungeon Keeper 1/2
Theme Park/Hospital
Half-life
Deus Ex
Unreal Tournament
Max Payne 1/2
Mafia (why has no-one played this game?)
Homeworld
CivII
Quake series
Black and White
Prince of Persia (sands of time)
Medieval Total War
These are all PC games that I consider either classics, or ones I play often and enjoy - I'm sure others can name many others, and will be insulted at some wildly obvious stuff I've missed - sorry, these are just the ones I've played.
Yeah, fine, consoles had some great games - I still play on both my N64 and megadrive - but let's not put down the considerable number of great pc games there's been and declare past consoles king...I don't want anymore potentially good PC games being wrecked by being written for x-box first.
you must be a mind reader.... they are all the sweetest games!! EVEN MAFIA ! and i think no one has played it cause it was around when GTA III was released and everyone got it insted...Originally Posted by Byatt
Your right, but I think the X-Box has got a lot to answer for, Nintendo games don't come out on PC and PS2 games are programed differently to the PC standards of Directx and OpenGL, the X-Box on the other hand is identical to the PC. So converting an X-Box title to PC is relativly easy and cheap to do, but this unfortinatly makes for a poor game. PS2 is sometimes no better but at least when they convert it they do upgrade/update the graphics a little because of having to re-write a lot of it anyway.games are only ruined on all-format releases with laziness by the developers & publishers.
Another thing is that all the games that come out get compaired to a previous version or genre benchmarks, like Half Life, C&C etc etc. But this isn't really fair and more than a bit missleading.
I was trying to remeber why HL was such a cool game the other day after Silent Death said he didn't rate it , because I remember it being cool when it came out, but I can't for the life of me remember why. I found myself compairing it to some of the games that have come out since and the AI wasn't that great, the enemy's consisted of the aliens that went straight for you and the grunts the went for you, then run away once they got hit and then threw a grenade but mostly ran around shouting. The graphics where a bit different because everything up until that point had been dark, HL had lots of light and clear blue skys. And it was in the most part a platformer - I remember endlessly jumping from A to B, going up this ladder down the next elevator...
But it had the hype, PC Zone had something to do with HL almost every issue after it came out, and I think thats whats wrong now - there are a lot of games out there that are good, even great but don't get the press and so are shunned a little, it's like the thing where you like a DVD or a Film but popular opion say's it's poo and so you avoid telling people that you like it.
There is also that thing where someting is as never special as the first time you see it, the first time you played a 3D FPS, RPG, RTS, etc (lol to many abreviations ) is always the one that sticks in you mind.
Fair enough...but take away the money-grabbing opportunities of the x-box and you stop running decent games through the potential grinder that coding for x-box, or indeed any console, first brings.Originally Posted by directhex
