Dynasty Warriors 6 full screen not filling monitor problem

I've been playing dynasty warriors on the PS2 for years. When I saw version 6 on the PC cheap I jump at it!

Problem is it doesn't support large screen sizes - My monitor goes up to 1680x1050 - dynasty warriors goes up to 1280x720. This wouldn't be a problem but I can't get the monitor to fill the screen. I get black bars all round the screen. My monitor doesn't have any resizing options I can find and appears to automatically resize when display at lower res in windows. I've had problems turning on GPU stretching in the ATI control panel (appears to be a Win7 x64 problem) but even with it on I still get the black bars.

Any fixes/hacks/utilities to get the game to fill the screen? Its playable but losing half the screen space is horrible!

Probably because 1280*720 = 16:9 ratio where as 1680*1050 = 16:10 ratio.

I understand that but why doesn't the monitor/ATI gpu resize the display so I've only have black bars at the bottom or sides (can't work it out in my head which it would be)? As it is I've got half my screen display black on the sides and top/bottom?

Because your monitor may not support lower resolutions, even tho you'd expect it to be able to display an 'inderior' image, it may be artificially and physically limited from doing so.

But it works with Windows if I reduce the resolution?

Also shouldn't ATI GPU stretching code take affect in that case?

It maybe a question as to why the ATI gpu stretching option isn't kicking in?

Well if it works in windows im not to sure then, the game must be the cause if everything else works when asked to display a 16:9 image :/

Its irritating but I guess I'll just have to live with a 12" picture on a 22" screen until they issue a patch (unlikely) or ATI update the GPU stretching in a later driver.

For the record I've managed to fix it! I've set the game to a lower resolution and its now filling the screen (minus two really tiny black bars!). Not ideal but at least I can enjoy it now.
