Heres an example. With am mouse, you can aim at individual pixels on a 1600*1200 screen. Analoge joysticks just cant do that. My satiek cyborg pro joystick, which is very good, can, and its good for playing flight sims - I got it for IL2, but it still cant compare to a decent mouse. Contorol pad mini-joysticks are ubercrap in comparason - nowhere near as accurate.
Also once its moved, its moved, Doesnt need to be held in place by your thumb.
Not only that, with a optical mouse as control - or even just a trackball (which I think could be VERY good for consoles) the developers have the freedom to design ANY kind of GUI they like. It allows for more complex gaming.
Now take a look at console games and there menus. I havent really played much past ps1, but all of them I have; the menus go no further than arcade game complexity. doesnt that limit the type of games a lot?? yes.
