I have to agree with the doubters. Farcry immersed you into Jack's character and to a large extent you could chose the way you played the game. Doom was in itself a great tech demo but not a great game. The effects were undeniable but there was no immersion and or desire to keep unamed marine alive.

I just hope HL2 doesnt make the same mistake as the sequel to Deus Ex did...

So, the reason we want Half Life II is to see progress, both in terms of looks, as Doom III managed, and gameplay, as it didn't.
Yeah....my point being, why come to the conclusion firstly that a direct remake of a ten year old game is a good idea and, most importantly, that a remake can only take advantage of advances in graphics, and nothing else?

Well exactly. Carmack wanted to remake Doom, and fair play to him he did. Problem is, in order for it to be Doom, it had to look like Doom (obviously a lot better, but still tunnels, monsters, etc) and play like Doom. For some reason, whilst transforming the looks beyond all recognition, they left the gameplay pretty much the same as the 1993 original.

Suprise, suprise; it felt outdated. Strange that, seeing as it was, by a decade or so.

FarCry was a better game because it looked great but was also interesting to play, where as Doom III look great but was tedious to play. I'm sure, come what may, Half Life II will not fall into the same trap, and end up being pretty much a re-run of Half Life with a graphical touch up.

I though Farcry was a terrible game. The story was uninteresting and the monsters dull and annoying. Much prefered the scares of Doom 3. Both games have fantastic engines though with much better to come in the future I think. Hopefully HL2 will have a great engine and a great game.

The Source engine is still full of bugs unfortunately. The game will definitely be good, the reason being is because that the valve team have spent all of their time making everything in the HL2 world available for you to interact with and have better scenes and so forth. They've concentrated a lot on the actual game though as opposed to the engine and i think they have the largest team working on the game.

You have it dead on there

HL2 is not going to be a remake anyway, its going to be a continuation of the story - carrying on where HL1 left off at the end with Gmans speech. I would be shocked if it was a bad game tbh...

Don't think anyone said Half Life II was a remake, it is as you say, a continuation of the story. If only Doom III was a continuation, freeing the designers from the tedium of having to try and remake a decade old game.

Half Life II is the main attraction though and that's brand new gameage as well as looking great, anything else is a nice bonus. Doom III was the main attraction, as the mutliplayer was weak and you didn't get anything else with the package.

When the remake is the main game, it better be good, or any gamer worth his salt will see through it. As most did.

As Vaul said, it's a bonus. And even now, 6 years on, HL's gameplay is still passable, which is more than can be said for Doom III.

As I recall, I only asked if it was going to be included....I didn't make any comment on whether that was a good or a bad thing ;-)
