Yep thought it was good, didn't like some of the restriction compared to the original, but such comparisons aside thought it was pretty good.

If you have purchased a copy of Half-Life 2, we are sorry you are still waiting to play. This is not Valve's choice. Vivendi is insisting that the game has not yet been released, and has threatened that Valve would be in violation of its contract if we activate the Half-Life 2 Steam authentication servers at this time.

Thanks for your patience and we will update you when we have more news to share.
unsure of exactly what this means - dunno if it means more delays or not... *sob* if it does!

    no it means that
hl2 will be unlockable on the 16th
but people can buy it and install it on their comps, however they cant unlock it to play the final game it is the same with steam downloaders
vivendi is the distributers and valve have a contract with them, vivendi are having a laugh with all us eager hl2ers by saying we cant unlock it until they say so.....the 16th
    i think
    Pete

basically what it means is that Valve won't be unlocking the games early, as rumoured, just because some stores started selling it early.

I can see Valve ditching VU somewhere in the next couple of years.

As for Half Life II, Valve would need some balls to release anything other than a near perfect product after all this time...

Yep, I agree with that on both counts, Halo was looking very good even though it went Xbox only prior to release. By the time it came out on PC it had been surpassed by everything... playing a port of a two year old game is not fun.

As for Valve, that fact they're using the Havok engine but using it to its full extent gives me confidenece in a polished product physics wise. The storytelling has laways been one of valves strong points, so I reckon this will be spot on too.

As for GFX, well, let's see. I know the movies look superb, but that matters little if it runs like a dog on my rig. And before anyone kicks off, yes, I LOVE to have the latest bits of kit to run everything maxed out, but this is the real world where money is not in abundance. So I'll be happy with a few beels and whistles NOT clanging and blowing, but a decent frame rate with a nice looking enviroment to go with it.

I have to say, I do find it a worry that developers seem to think that us gamers have bottomless funds to upgrade our rigs for each new game. HOWEVER, its also heartening to see that they are still coding for lower specced machines so even if we don't get the lush visuals, at least we still get to play the game.

Anyway, I'm 88% through pre-load of silver, so I'm gonna stop using my bandwidth and let it get on with it.
