uhuh, i think i will be ordering dod:source aswell mainly because it will last longer than lost coast and because obviously it was HDR plut it looks cool.Originally Posted by Pirate Pete
well another reason ive been putting off buying dod is due to the fact that i dont really like cs source and as i dont know anyone thats got dod i cant give it a test run before i buy it.
i do like call of duty and other ww2 games though, how similar is it to cs? and how big is it to download? i take it if you ever need to reinstall windows again you can just keep downloading it as you need to aswell?
Very impressive, graphically, the Souce engine is still Number 1 IMO, for all round ability.
The Length was a bit sad though, seeing as how long it's been in development. The commentary is a nice touch.
CS:S gets HDR too, its in the options cant wait for a level that supports itOriginally Posted by Ramedge
i cant even get it to start, it attempts to boot then nothing but desktop, bah, anyone have any ideas why it wont start
could it be the 8x.xx beta drivers i'm using?
Played through Lost Coast yesterday. I thought it was excellent, especially the commentary. Quite amusing to hear how uncomfortable artists and developers sounded!
It was always going to be short - its a technology demo. The effort went into the tech not the story. It looked amazing. What was even more amazing (to me anyway) is that it ran ok on my machine, despite being warned that I had a sub-par CPU (it said I needed 2.9Ghz P4). OK, it was at 800x600 with no AA or AF, but all the other options were turned to maximum.
As for DOD:S, its a grower. I'm a hardened 1337 0wnz0r in DOD (ahem), so I jumped onto DOD:S. Its a different game really. Had to learn it all over again, but if you perserver its worth. There are so many subtle details from visuals to sound, it really is good. I'm afraid I don't like CS, never have done, and I've dabbled in the different versions, including Source. I can assure you that DoD:S is nothing like CS:S.

My first thought on loading the level was "wow". It looks amazing... A salient reminder that HL2 has an incredible engine (I saw no slowdown with HDR at 1600x1200). I really can't see what the fuss with FEAR was - it looks nowhere near this good and runs a good deal slower..
I downloaded the demo of FEAR the other day. It does look impressive with all the details up, but its a machine-eater. I could get it to play just about smoothly enough at 640x480 with all details at low or medium. Not really how the game was intended to be played I think.
And that, I reckon, is the real power of the Source engine, and where Valve have clearly focussed a lot of effort, quite rightly. They want to reach the widest audience without compromising the visual experience too much. By and large, Source games such as HL2 and DOD seem to work pretty well on a very wide range of platform configurations, and that is quite an achievement. It may not be top dog in graphics engines, but I reckon the flexibility it brings makes it the best around. Its that old debate again to some extent - graphics over gameplay...hmm, thats worth a poll I think...

Started to download this this morning, says my CPU isnt fast enuf as its only 2Ghz where as it wants 2.2Ghz...
Guessing it doesnt check for x2 cores
What I don't get is that everyone seems to be getting different CPU requirements. Maybe their configuration tool is taking all components into account. Source seems to be RAM heavy.
For me it said 2.5Ghz wasn't enough, and I needed 2.9Ghz. HOwever, it didn't stop me playing, and it played ok.
Could be....
x2 3800
2Gb
x800
720Gb HDD Space
Or it could take the AMD/Intel thing into account??
Dunno, surely if it requires 2.2Ghz its not looking at the dual cores properly tho?
