Jumping back a bit here...

What's that smell when you breathe in the gas at the top of a brand new bottle of pop then?

Well, there isn't one really. CO2 is mildly acidic, so if you get a load up your nose it'll dissolve in the water in your nose lining which will make it sting a bit.

Can I just say that I came up with that explanation before I double checked on wikipedia, before anyone accuses me of blatant plagiarism.
