    Global Warming (Busses !)

So the government wants to cut CO2 gasses yeah ?. So every night from work I end up driving behind these polluting busses. I can hardly breath, and because I drive with my fan on no.2, I end up choking in their fumes, sometimes the cr@p coming out of the exhuast is so BAD I can hardly see the bus infront of me !!!!

Do busses have to get MOT's ? I can hardly believe that these "chimnies on wheels" can get past a MOT test - what makes them so special that they can get away with polluting the air like this ?
If I'm not back in 5 minutes - just wait longer !

But most of the time, they have 1 or 2 people on them everywhere but london.

Good point! I don't cycle much but years ago I would cycle to work in the summer up a pretty steep hill, if the bus was passing at the same time I'd have to stop. Apart from the obvious coughing from the black fumes, it felt like it had used all the air up nearby. Apart from 8am and 6pm runs you were lucky to see 2 people on that bus!

CO2 doesn't smell. I daresay what you're choking on are particulates.

Yes, they have to pass an MOT test. If you think a vehicle is unreasonably smoky, then you can report it to your local authority. In London, buses don't tend to smoke at all unless they're faulty, the latest ones have Euro IV compliant engines. I daresay that outside of london, the buses tend to be older and smokier.

A single decker bus can do in the region of 10-13mpg I believe. Even with 4 or 5 people on board that's pretty good economy per person, and with 50 on board, it's extremely good. I would also point out that if you were on the bus rather than in your car, you wouldn't be breathing its fumes.

In terms of pollution, vehicles aren't a main cause of CO2 emissions, apparently.

That was listed as the top most likely cause for all greenhouse gas emissions in the western world.
