    Lightbulb Banning drinking under 15?

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6596515.stm

I don't know what other people's views on this are, but I believe that this would increase the problem.

I was brought up on a "Continental" way of drinking, therefore I've had a bit with my meals since I was little. When I got to 18, the novelty wasn't the alcohol itself, but the fact that I could buy it!

Banning it completely in the home will glorify it at 16, thus increasing the child drinker problem.

(ok, might have stopped me getting completely off my face on white wine when I was 5... but then I wasn't given it, i was norty and pinched it!)

    Thoughts?

Agreed. If alcohol is a restricted substance, its appeal is higher. Look at the insanity in the US when people hit 21 and can drink.
On the continent people drink from a young age, and have much fewer drinking problems.

    This would make things worst.

There's more to it than just the glorifying of alcohol.

It all stems from the past when miners used to get 'last orders' in and drink as quick as possible because the pubs were closing so they all had to go home and get some sleep before work.

Now, seeing this for a fair few years is going to have an effect on the children and they have just copied what the 'adults' have done in front of them over and over again.

Pass this down the line a few generations and we are now eperiencing a binge drinking explosion.

Education is the key rather than prohibition or banning certain age ranges from drinking.

I was wondering how they plan to ban people giving their kids alcohol at home. Not like they have CCTV in every household to check...

It wouldnt change the situiation because
    a) Parents will still give it
    B) Kids pay parents for the alcohol
    C) Specally 15 year old in my area will still be able to get hold of it

What they need to do is educate the parents and childrens at school

Definitely another Nanny-too-far move as far as I'm concerned.

I grew up drinking the stuff and it hasn't turned me into an alcoholic!

What a load of nonsense. Go find any kid between 3 and 15 and tell them they aren't allowed to stand on one foot anymore. Every single one will start standing on one foot right in front of you.

Same applies with beer. If you're not allowed something it makes you want it more. My dad came up with a great way to stop me drinking when I was 8 he said I could have a little bit of beer. Some nice warm bitter. Didn't touch any for years

Everyone knows kids shouldn't drink, that doesn't mean there should be a law. Kid's shouldn't play in the road it doesn't mean we need to run barbed wire fences the length of Britain's roads.

I agree with Tigs, I was brought up with the continental style of drinking, and now instead of going out getting rat assed and returning home, I can enjoy a drink socially. Tis a much better way - and all that red wine is good for your heart afterall

    Even breakfast?

Yes, I heard this this morning and was shocked at the stupidity of it. It's bound to increase the appeal of alcohol to kids, it'll become more "cool" to get alcohol simply because you're not allowed to have it.

Agreed on the "parents need educating" thing, maybe showing in graphic detail how it can affect their kids. You can try and educate the kids on it but I don't think it'll work.

I'm still not a fan of White Wine... Or Mars Bars for that matter (I was force fed on them to counter-act the alcohol poisoning)

And a rather indulgent night with some Archers when I was 18 means that I can't even smell the stuff without wanting to heave.

Same, and I think you're absolutely right. The less of a novelty you allow it to become, the less of an urge for anything other than moderation.
