Im back and forth visiting Papworth hospital for my mum at the moment. Talking to the consultants raises your eyebrows quite a bit. Papworth is the leading heart/lung hospital in the UK, they know their stuff like no-one else.
They are alot less judgemental than I expected, they just point out the very proven scientific information regarding the damage smoking can do. It's a cause of alot of health problems but they don't try and blame everything on smoking, but do help you truly understand the serious risk of long-term smoking.
It's helping alot
Good luck you lot and remember to have a goal. My goal is to use the cash saved to buy a 9800xt

I used to study anatomy years ago when I was studying to be a dentist and it was indeed frightening to see smokers lungs, large black tarry patches show through, it is not a pretty sight.
Still off them anyway and allowing my lungs a chance to recover from their no-doubt charcoal like state.
Anyone who is off them and finding it hard, consider the nicorette stick they give that little boost needed when the commitment is flaggging and the head is pounding.

Well I may be joining you all soon
A mate of mine has sent me a book by Allen Carr (http://www.allencarrseasyway.com/). In this book (only read a few pages at mo though) he says he can show you an easy way to give up, without NRT (patches, gum ect) and also without the horrible withdrawl symptoms. So once I finish the book (he says do not stop smoking before you have read the entire book) I shall be a non-smoker *fingers crossed*
I bought 53 quid of patches, and I used two, anyone wanna buysome cheap patches? lol
You don't need them if you REALLY want to give up quickly.

I'll agree with Blub2k, it's really not that hard after a while!
If you can do a week, then you can do 2. If you can do 2, then you can do a month. If you can do.... (you get the picture!)
Hidden Spirit, I'd be interested to know what that book is like. Can you give us an update when you've read some of it?
Yeah sure
You all stay focused now and you will definately succeed. You might like to try the following distractionary tactics.
Drink only water and lots of it. Eat only 'unprocessed' real food at every meal. Drink a half hour before you eat particularly if you suffer indegestion. Eat five times per day at regular intervals preferably before you feel hungry. Avoid low fat, high protien or high carbohydrate fad diets and try instead to blance the fat, protien & carbohydrate content of every meal. Build your aerobic base fittness by regular walking. Limit excersise intensity to 70% of your max heart rate and throw some recovery days into the mix. Take action now to eliminate or reduce stress in your life.
With the exception of the no-smoking rule remember to break any or all the above rules as often as is necessary to maintain your sanity. Live long, prosper and don't smoke ever again.
Right, so how are people doing now? It'll be 8 weeks for me this Friday!
I will admit though, I've had the odd one or two whilst drinking at valentine's and last weekend when out with my g/f and a couple of other friends. But since I still haven't smoked during the week once or had any other than when I've had a bit to drink I think it's going quite successful.
Anyone else find this? Perhaps it's the old 'out with mates thing' that makes me wanna have one, dunno. Anyone else had a few sneaky ones?
right thought I'd add my 2p's worth. At the moment I'm in a state of "I'll give up tomorrow" feeling everyday. Only yesterday I was nearly throwing my guts up when I was having a quick cig break at work. I have gone from 20 a day all the way down to basically 3 - 4 a day now. I have planned to give up by summer and if this is the case, I will have done.
I might go and see if I can get locked up for 3 weeks in a local 5 star jail to go cold turkey
Keep up the good work folks - your giving up is me inspiration
