I have the size L broadband package from Virgin. I've had this ever since it was ntl's 512Kb deal years ago. I've noticed on the Virgin website that size L goes up to 4mb, when I am still getting 2. Does anyone know how I get upgraded to 4?

They upgraded me a few months ago, didn't have to do anything.
If I spend more than 3 mins 24 seconds browsing they throttle me back to 2mb until the following day, but there you go

Same here done nothing, get throttled very quickly, as said above you have to wait for the magic beard rub, he forgets some mornings, its a right pain.
had enough of my own probs with them to get started
have a look at the modem satus page Here (the user and pass are both root), look for operation config and maximum download data rate, if it's any different to a 4meg config get on to cs
they might try to get you to tech support but avoid if at all poss because it's no longer free (25p per min + 10p connection charge to speak to a script muncher when you'd be better asking for advice from the chef in the local takeaway)
there have been speed issues local(ish) although maybe nationwide since the rollout of the 20meg(XL) service upgrading 10meg users to the lightning fast snail speed of not very fast at the moment, but not sure if these issues affect just ex 10meg users or the network as a whole.
as regard to the shaping/thottling details can be found Here and Here , now i assume this covers downloading and includes browsing and watching streaming video and is a pain in the ass.

I think im the lucky one. Since moving to cable about 6 months ago I've not had any issues.
I had downtime of around an hour a couple of weeks back (entire area died), but otherwise its been great.
Only thing im mad over is the download limits after signing up, because I was assured by them that there were no limits. Infact, I keep meaning to find the advertising material out they sent me and see what Trading Standards / ASA have to say about it. I just don't see how they can change their T&C's in such a huge way and get away with it.
I'll save you the trouble with the ASA:
The ASA basically say cable/VM can say what they like on their own website, and leaflets etc they send you as that doesn't count as they are not 3rd party advertising.
You'll have to find an advert in a paper/magazine or TV and complain about that.
What annoys me is that I was on 10Mb, throttled back to 5Mb as soon as you use it.
They upgrade me to 20Mb, throttled back to -errr- 5Mb as soon as you use it.
So I'm no better off at all, and probably throttled sooner than on 10MB
Seriously considering Be-ADSL and their 24Mb download... wonder what limits they have?

@SuicidaL - thanks for that, a useful link there.

dunno what BE's limits if any are, vm's are 350Mb(M)/750(L)/3Gb(XL)......look Here on that forum theres also a lot of vm bashing due to these cock-up's.
@Agent
Well they told me that in a letter, but here's a quote:
http://www.dti.gov.uk/consumers/fact...page38036.html
The ASA will investigate complaints about paid-for advertisements that appear on a third party's site, including banner ads, pop-ups, commercial e-mails and promotions.
The self-regulatory system does not cover the content of an advertiser's own website, apart from sales promotions

Our area is still not upgraded to the sooper dooper high speed, and I'm still on 4MB (mistyped mB then, may as well be true !) but only getting 2MB if I'm lucky.
THEY say its a known fault on my local UBR and is still ongoing. HOWEVER, they did refund me THREE months charges (£75) which was nice.
Moral ?
Complain till yer blue in the face and ask for a refund
I may be switching over to ADSL at the end of the 3 months... We'll see.
