Re: Commuting - Car vs Public Transport

To be fair Iranu, 20mins in a car isn't a reflection on how far it is - or if it's safe to do so.

I personally would not want to cycle up the A5 everyday... I'd be scared to death!! I'm hardly a fan of cycling, but I just can't see myself doing it on many of the roads between my house and work!

I'd feel safer on a motorbike... atleast you have the power to get out ( or into ) trouble. My legs aren't up to that kind of demand!

It's not complete by any means. They seem to think the train I use to get to work doesn't exist, and offer a complicated set of alternatives that go out of the way to take longer.

Re: Commuting - Car vs Public Transport

To get to work by 9am (though I normally arrive around 8:15am anyway):

Car: 52mins, which is rubbish. Even on my 3 ton 125cc Honda Shadow, which tops out at 60mph on a good day, I'm there in 35mins, including getting changed at each end. It's also added 4 miles to the 17 mile jouney somehow.

Not as good as the bus option though...

Public transport (bus and walking): I'd have to leave at 5:30pm the night before... arriving at 6:50pm. That's a long wait for the caretaker to open up. It's true though, the earliest bus to Seahouses from Alnwick arrives at 9:45am. Loads of use. I'm surprised it didn't just offer walking alone. I'd be setting off later.

    46 minutes...or 15 (bus & metro then a walk vs car)

And I will be car sharing with my flatmate who will be on the same shifts as me

Mine lists PT at 57 mins best, car as 21 mins (it's actually closer to 15).
However it's 10 miles, which would take the better part of an hour to cycle, and many of the roads are incredibly dangerous for cycling round here.

Re: Commuting - Car vs Public Transport

Well, for me I just have to get out of bed, get dressed and then walk out the door to start work, so I did it between here and my parent's place.

    Car - 4hrs 10mins (209 miles)
    Bus,Train,Walk - 5hrs 23mins - Which ain't bad, but requires I leave at 1300, which I never do.
    Bus,Train,Walk - 7hrs 45mins - This is for when I normally finish on a Friday (1600ish)

Re: Commuting - Car vs Public Transport

53 mins if I were to bus it to work, tried it for a week once just to see what it was like and it was hell, in the car it takes 28 mins, which isn't far off depending on how busy the roads are and how hard I'm being with my right foot.
