    Quick cures for tonsilitus

Well went to the doctors yesterday they are like "yeh acute tonsilitus, antibiotics, bla bla"
Now the problem is, anti-biotics do jack crap and with swollen tonsils etc paracetemol really isn't ideal as a pain killer.
So here i am now starving hungry and unable to eat anything as its so painful (oh and even if i deal with the pain stuff gets caught on my tonsils and i have coughing fits (which you can imagine hurt so much).
So i was just wondering, is there any like tricks to getting food down your neck or any miracle cure anyone knows of, because i am dieing

    Re: Quick cures for tonsilitus

You have my sympathy. I used to be a chronic sufferer but had them out after a bad case of quinsy.

All I ever got was penicillin and paracetamol, too. I found that the Paracetamol does eventually work, to an extent, but really you just have two or three days of pain to go through. Sorry.

Then it's not tonsilitus. Anti-biotics clear up real tonsilitus pretty darn quickly - sometimes the concentration needs to build up first, but it's pretty much a 100% gaurenteed treatement - more so than just about any other medical treatment out there.

    Gargle aspirin.

    Re: Quick cures for tonsilitus

I've always taken Ibuprofen - it's an inflammation so that will help to bring the swelling down enough to eat. Paracetamol will help with the pain, and you can take both together, but I find offsetting them will keep the pain relief topped up.

It might be viral tonsilitis too, so the antibiotics might not work, you'll just have to fight it. Keep yourself full of fluid and try to eat as much as possible to keep your strength up. Also, Antibiotics will take 2 days to build up in your system, which is why they tell you to try them and "come back in a few days" if there's no change. Give it 3 days and if it's bacterial you will see/feel a difference.

Soup, ice cream and minced beef and onions out of a can is what i lived on for a week back when I did my GCSEs and got it bad (3 tries on the antibiotics - stronger each time) - I also had rhumatic fever on top, was a complete state.
    Mash potato possibly?

Vicks Ultrachloraseptic spray is the dogs too.

    Re: Quick cures for tonsilitus

I had it easter '05, was in bed for a week, was at time when there was a spate of mumps cases going round uni, went to the nhs dropin at the local hospital and told me it was tonsilitis.

I could not eat or drink for a week, was given some powerful paracetamol/cocodamol, antibacterial mouthwash and antiobiotics. My mouth was constatntly dry as i could barely drink, after a week i started drinking and the first things i ate were yoghurt as they are easy on the throat but still got good nourishment.

Needless to say a week of no food or wtaer meant i dropped a stone in weight, although that took about another 2 weeks to go back on. Also my taste buds were screwed up for a couple of months due to my mouth being so dry.

The only thing was that after the recovery from tonsilitus i found out that it had done some nerve damage to my shoulder muscle were it holds the shoulder blade, i believe they call it winging, where the shoulder blade does not sit quite right. I went on a physio course at the hospital for a couple of months which helped, although it is still not back to the way it used to be but i've got used to it and doesn't stop me using it as normal. Apparently it is quite common for nerve damage to occur when one has a bacterial or viral infection such as tonsilitis. Thankfully in the time since i have not had any recurrence, touch wood.

    Re: Quick cures for tonsilitus

Had bad tonsilitis earlier this year, took two lots of antibiotics (mega ones in the end) to clear it up.
For relief I drank hot lemon and honey. Cut a lemon in half and squeeze the juice into a mug, add a GOOD teaspoon of honey, then pour on boiling water. Drink when it is nice and hot, though sip it don't neck it like a pint. If you want (and I wanted) you can add a dash of JD etc.

Your antibiotics will not start to work until 48 to 72 hours. Also try soluble paracetamol and gargle.

Try sticking your finger in an ear when swallowing - sounds silly, but it works for me and a few people (something to do with pressure?).

Urrgh... horrible is that. I had it really bad last year and lived on nothing but milkshakes for a week. It was the only thing I can stand to drink... I had a couple of bowls of soup in the week too!

Whenever I get tonsilitis, I go and have them out.

I've only had it once when I was 6.

    Re: Quick cures for tonsilitus

I suffered from strep throat loads... pretty much the same thing.

Remember to completely finish the course of penicillin, even if the pain goes away before you finish the half the pack.

Warm tomato soup.... Through a straw.

You have my sympathy mate, I know how it feels.

Edit: Oh, and if you can get Tylenol from the U.S... Get some.... They're awesome, and kick ANY pain killers over here to the floor.
