Job Loyalty??

Ok, so many of us have been there, you're in a job you're just not quite happy with but you know you're needed. Where's the point to draw the line and move on? Do you wait to see if there's a point where you aren't needed (and risk getting fired??) or do you just call it a day and just go with what's best to you whatever your ex-employeer might think??

Re: Job Loyalty??

Usually if you're needed there'll be financial compensation. So if companies keep rewarding me for what I'm doing, I feel valued, and that motivates me. Even if I'm not enjoying the work, if I'm contributing and I'm appreciated, I'm not one to feel hard done by, and I'm likely to stay.

If they take me for granted for a while, I look about.

Re: Job Loyalty??

If the company has loyalty to you, and will take care of you through some problems, then return the favour.

If they will fire you as and when they want for their own convenience, return the favour - leave when you find a better job. Obviously do give the required notice.

Re: Job Loyalty??

Yup, I'm quite happy to be very loyal to a company as long as the favour is returned, if they start taking advantage of me then that's it..

It's a two-way street, and the days of a job for life are long gone.

And if you're worried that you're secretly incompitant at your job and worried that you'll be fired as soon as your additional skills are no longer useful??

Thats nothing to do with Loyalty though. Competance doesn't have any baring on loyalty.

Re: Job Loyalty??

That's fair enough - as long as you do the bare minimum of your job requirement so you don't put your redundancy at risk, nobody could or should ask for anything more really.

So true! I guess I really just have to face facts that I'm only good at part of my job and whilst the company desperately needs me to do the part I'm good at, I need to do a job I'm good at 100% of

Re: Job Loyalty??

I felt very screwed over by a company i was working for, i also know that by leaving them i cost them a lot of money, many times more than my salary.

The reason i felt so screwed over was that they had me on a measily 37.5 + 10, given that i was doing more complex, more business critical and therefore more risky work than a contractor on 150, whose hand i had too keep holding through the idea of OO. Seriously, I even spent a sat teaching him about multithreading + .net Reflection.

The point is, they only offered me a raise when i gave them my letter of resignation, my previous pay review I was effectivly told at 21 i didn't command enough industry experiance to ask for any more money, despite my track record over the last few months at the company.

I decided to leave that day, the company had given me a good wage for a grad, espesually a 2-1 from a red brick uni, but had failed to take good care of me, asking me to work 12 hour days, day in day out, and not rewarding me with anything like industry average, all the loyalty i felt vanished.

That is why i choose Mabye, if the company is taking care of you, not working you to death, then mabye you should be loyal. Otherwise, i know some real slave trader of a recruitment consultant!

Re: Job Loyalty??

I personally believe you have to be fairly selfish with respect to your employer. I probably never used to think like this, but circumstances change and perhaps I have become more cynical too. I have a mortgage to pay and a young family to support - my loyalty is to them not my employer.

I'm not actively seeking new employment, but I do keep an eye out. If I came across something that was the right job and it paid more I'd be applying straight away.

Re: Job Loyalty??

If you have a skill that's in demand, consider looking for a new job as soon as you have been given a pay rise - that way, you can quote your new rate as the basis for negotiation and effectively get 2 pay rises at once; however, don't job hop too much or it'll look bad on your CV - there's a fine balance to be drawn, too many jobs make you look dodgy and unreliable, too few and you'll seem unambitious. I reckon that you should never stay in a job for more than a couple of years unless you get promotion or a big pay rise - and if someone junior to you gets promoted over you, get out fast...
Loyalty? Well, if a company will guarantee both my job and an above-inflation pay rise every 6 months...
(on the other hand, if you're happy where you are, get on well with your colleagues, aren't over-stressed by your responsibilities, aren't hungry for promotion and are happy with your wages - then you have all the makings of a loyal employee - however, this is no guarantee that your employer will show the same degree of loyalty to you...)

Re: Job Loyalty??

Its strange because i jumped ship mostly for £££, but its a lot happyer, more relaxed, and the quality of my work is better. Its seen as ok to take breaks, surf the net etc, which is useful because even as i'm writiing this in the back of my mind i'm thinking "inherit from list<t> implement IChangeTracking etc. More relaxed me makes for better design + projects done faster + lots more money for the firm.
