    For you newish Uni people

Taken from a facebook group, but you get the idea:

Ok, so basically the government have decided to give much more generous grants (not loans, grants!) to a much wider range of people starting uni next year, however this is not applicable for those of us already at uni. So..we've created a petition on the government's website asking for existing students (i.e those who started in 2006 and 2007, at the same time as the increased tuition fees) to be entitled to the same grants as well, which only seems fair...

Petition to: extend the new, more generous, funding arrangements for undergraduates starting their courses in autumn 2008 to those who began their courses in 2006 and 2007.

I, for one totally agree with this. I got a bullcrap amount of loan for my first year, because my dad has a high-paying job (and ex-navy pay), despite the fact I'm at Uni in Brighton, they live in Devon, and I'm trying to live for myself, not off of my parents. Does my nut in.

So, if any of you newish uni studenty types agree, please sign, at least the petition is in the right place for it to be seen!

    Cheers

    Sucks don't it CMC.

Really we should lobby to abolish student fee's altogether, but looks like the government is doing sweet FA in this country at the moment except suck more money out of the student and money-making population

Re: For you newish Uni people

Ok so in that case should I petition to have my loan from 2000 onwards paid back as I never got a grant?

I don't think so somehow, things change people get a better deal than others, that is tough and part of being at uni.

I was on the lowest of the bands for loan because my parents earnt so much, I still had to live off of it as you do BlackDwarf. It is just how things are.

Re: For you newish Uni people

I think he means for this year's installments, rather than claiming them back for last year, because he's going to be starting his year alongside newer students getting a much better deal. (What if you switched course or uni or something BlackDwarf?)

But yes, if we're talking refunds, I'd like my loan paid back too please!

Yes of course they do! They result in a biiig long list of e-mail addresses of people who care, that the government then needs to fire some lame excuse off to as to why they're not going to do it in an attempt to stop people complaining.

Re: For you newish Uni people

Tbh, I don't agree with the government subsidising any degrees and much of education, but that's my unrealistic mind speaking.

I'm hopefully off to Uni in september but I don't qualify for anything means tested and I guess that means I'll just be working a lot in the holidays and perhaps during term time as my parents aren't offering any support.

I agree with previous posters, we can't just backdate changes made, especially as it's difficult to know when to draw the line.

Yes ... lets lobby the government so anyone that wants a few more years 'work free' can do pointless further education such as media studies or Jedi Knight studies. In fact....why dont we pay more tax to work shy people than we are already.

The days of needing intelligence to go to University are long gone and thinking the tax payer should foot the bill is awful.

(just let me say, there are obvious exceptions such as people training to be doctors/dentist etc. The VAST majority are just on a jolly though lets be honest)

Ooh, seems to have hit a nerve with some.

I do work Blitzen thank you very much.

Chicken got it right, I'm not talking about back-dating and giving money back to students who have finished courses, I got the ****ty end of the stick this year as far as loans go, I can deal with that, but if new uni students starting next academic year get more money than me next academic year, I think that's unfair. One rule for one group of people, one rule for the others.

I'm happy at uni, but anything to make my life easier during my time here will be great. My loan covers rent and thats it. I work, but all the money I earn goes on living (I'm not one of those students who spent all their money on booze in the first term), and I'm fed up of having to go back to my parents to bail me out again. Yes, they're loving parents, thats what they're supposed to do, but at the end of the day, I want to be self-reliant, and being shafted for loans/grants because of my parents financial circumstances is crap.

Sorry for the tangent-esque rant there.
