That petition website was set up by a genius - people go there and vent. Someone comes along a month later and waffles - either that we will look into it, or some other generic response which sounds like emails from asian call centres (maybe they outsources this too) and people then just forget about it and move on.

Having a phobia of flying, or water, or spiders in no way makes you old fashioned, or means you are living in the past.

So to answer your question - no, its not ironic, in any way, shape or form.

    Thanks for asking though.
just to clarify, i didn't say you were scared of flying because of devils work.

also to clarify, not attacking you - just highlighting a comparison i find interesting

As a matter of interest, how did you approach the subject of your childs religious beliefs? Did you let her make her own mind up, or did you preach about this and that, singing about a little donkey, and saying praise the Lord a lot?

I ask because I've noticed an amazing coincidence... most Christians have Christian parents, but (and this is the amazing part) most Muslims have Muslim parents! And Hindus have... wait for it... wait for it... HINDU PARENTS!

    Now that, folks, is amazing.

Also, I'm not sure what sort of Christian you are, but if you and your good lady wife are young Earth creationists, can I ask how you explained dinosaur fossils to the nipper?

Probably because Christian, church - going kids are bashing out happy clappy tunes on a tambourine before they are on solids.

    What are Earth Creationists???????
Do they believe we were zapped here through space or born from flower buds or something?

Fair enough, I just don't see how being an athiest, but one who has a fear of flying is in anyway ironic. Unless you mean cold, hard logic tells us the religion is all nonsense, and cold, hard logic tells us that flying is the safest form of travel.

So me, as a cold, hard logic lovin athiest should be flying here, there and everywhere.

If that is what you mean - shut up.

I think it is young earth creationists you want to know about - i.e. earth created around 5000 years ago - god made a guy and girl from nothing, etc.

actually, space would be scientologists and flower buds would be more evolutionists (my opinion)

Re: Petition: Abolish faith schools (UK) - Part 2!

YEC hold the idea that God made the Earth thousands of years ago... then fixed it to make it appear as if the Earth was billions of years old. That God fella, huh? Always one step ahead.

But lets not knock God, he made man from dust (dust! omfg!) and the laydees from a mans rib (a rib! Zomgomfg!)

That makes God better than Derren Brown, Paul Daniels, and all the other false Gods that the deluded people worship.

Anyway, I withdraw from this thread now, apart from to reply to Nichos answer should one be posted, as I feel I may be draging it a *tad* off topic.

Do you have religious parents though?

As athiests generally don't take their kids once a week to a special building to preach the non-existance of God, it's slightly easier for a child from a non-religious family to end up going down a the religious route than the other way around.

just highlighting that it is pretty logical that athiests don't do that because u can't preach about nothing

BUT i reckon the reaction from parents should be the same if:

    1. a kid turned religious from an atheists family
    vs
    2. a kid turned non-religious from a religious family

it is just an equation with variables A and R or X and Y.

Doesn't that contradict what Stewart was saying when he said "most Christians have Christian parents"?

And for the record, no my parents aren't religious, yes I went to a faith-based school, no I still wasn't a christian when I came out of it, yes I became christian later.

Banning Faith schools is just as extreme as allowing them. I don't want to live in a society that bans everything that some people disagree with. I want to live in a society that bans things that the vast majority disagree with.

I would have said it was a better arguement to reduce the levels of funding for faith schools to be more proportional to the subset of the populatation they serve. That's a far more compelling arguement.

While that is a more compelling idea, how exactly do you define what proportion those subsets are? I seem to recall that in the last census it said that 70% of people consider themselves Christian. I have read other surveys that say that atheists/agnostics make up 25 million people in the country. Clearly you can't use demand as an indicator because the demand appears to be there due to the perceived (back to selection territory here) higher quality of education.

If 70% of people on a census consider themselves Christian, that's a sensible indicator.

The people who claim things like 25m agnostics will typically extrapolate their results from a statistically significant subset (for example, interview 1,000 people and ask if they go to church, if 40% say they don;t then you assume that they're non-Christian and thus 40% of ppl in the UK are agnostic)
