erm... thanks for the out of context quote.

My opinion of traffic lights (both types) is that with the exception of certain very busy junctions, they are irrelevant, annoying and unneeded, and people should be able to use the roads without them... and if uncapable should not be on the road in the first place. I think too many unnessasary lights are preventing people from becoming good experienced drivers.

However if they then cause an accident by advancing the junction when the light is red, they have no excuse, that accident is 100% their fault (as I argued in the other thread).
I do admit I go through red lights, but not often, only when its safe to do so and only at certain junctions (that I know do not have red light cameras, and have stupidly long biased delays..)

However here we are talking about the red "unsafe to cross" light of which is perfectly legal to ignore, relevant only to padestrians or cyclists (on a cyclepath), but will likely get you killed if you dont look first.

It is hard being a cyclist. Drivers hate you, pedestrians hate you, other cyclists hate you, the Police hate you, cats crossing the road hate you, dogs hate you, roads hate you, drains hate you, IBM hates you and everyone hates you.

If you're a Tory cyclist, the list is even longer

    Re: David Cameron

I like the way that RoSPA (or whatever they're called now) criticised him for breaking the rules. A recent report showed that female cyclists are something like twice as likely as males to die on London roads precisely because they do obey all the rules by waiting at red lights etc.- which is where they get crushed by lorries crossing over onto their side of the road etc..

It's almost certainly safer as a cyclist to jump the lights and position yourself away from the mass of traffic when the lights change. When I cycled a lot I would never just run a red light and carry on, but I'd often hop up onto an (empty) pavement, cross at the pedestrian crossing, and then carry on so that faster traffic could overtake me when they weren't concentrating on not driving into each other. It was basic common sense.

Anyone who sits alongside an artic, bus, digger or whatever on a bike is asking for trouble. Get out front where they can see you and where they then have to move at your pace for a while. If it means going through red, do it.

It is an urban sprawl, pwn that road dudes

Every year in this country over 15,000 cyclists are killed or injured in reported road accidents, including more than 2,300 who are killed or seriously injured.

    Re: David Cameron

Show me a cyclist that hasn't broken some law or other and I'll show you a liar. Anyone who has ever cycled on the road has at one time or another committed some trivial offence. Is it excusable? Well that depends on your out look. If you like nanny telling you what you can and can't do at every decision it will be no. If you think that as an individual you should be able to make decisions based on the individual set of circumstances bearing in mind you are not driving a ton of metal then the decision will be yes.

Anyone who's ever had to cycle in a city in rush hour will know that you are using every braincell just to keep one step ahead of the car drivers applying make up or eating breakfast or texting while they drive in order to stay in one piece. Mountain out of a mole hill.
