Angry Bank Card Fraud .. AGAIN! :(

This time on my debit card which is RARELY used...how the HELL did they swipe the info on a 3 month old debit card?

    It's not like I go round showing people the card number/sort code/account number/pin number/etc.

Just really gets me fuming that it seems like the minute you use a card at ANY ATM or petrol station (etc.), it's cloned.

My new policy, screw plastic cards...cash FTW.

Re: Bank Card Fraud .. AGAIN! :(

How would you get your cash out? ATM? Bank Teller? Cloning still available. Or you could hide it under your mattress ... then thieves know where to look.

Sorry it happened to you, hope it gets resolved without too much hassle.

Re: Bank Card Fraud .. AGAIN! :(

    Sorry to hear about that.

Don't get a debit card. Get a credit card and a limited amount cash card. Use the latter for cash machines and make sure it has a low daily limit, then use the credit card for everything else so you're protected. For places that don't accept credit card they should accept cheque or bank transfer.

I must be lucky - had debit cards since I was 16, credit card since the beginning of this year, and I have yet to have any trouble.

Used at a variety of places too - including petrol stations etc.

    Must just be unlucky?

Same here... it's just a fact of life really.

Carry cash around and it's instant money for someone if you lose your wallet. Carry cards and they can't easily get at your money (and you can cancel them, you can't cancel cash!)

Also if I carried cash, then I'd spend it.

But hey ho, each to their own.

I've had two instances of fraud, one with via PayPal the other was directly with my Masterard.

Both were sorted out quickly and easily.

Re: Bank Card Fraud .. AGAIN! :(

I too have had debit card since I was 16 (or was it 18), either way at least 7 years with no issue. That is until I get issued with a new card, 3 months later and about 6-8 uses later, I been cloned.

The first card cloned was in Jan this year with my credit card but that is to be expected. I abuse that with a passion.

Thanks for the advice Kalniel, I will most likely do what you suggested.

I just really feel like a muppet, where did I go wrong, how did I get scammed twice?

It ruined what was a nice weekend.

Re: Bank Card Fraud .. AGAIN! :(

I had an old debit card i got when i was 16(23 now) never actually used it cause i had another card.

Long story short, i noticed on my online banking carphone warehouse where taking sums between 11 and 18£ every month.

Weird thing is ive never dealt with CWH or their affiliated companies.

Went on for over a year lol, and i didnt realise

Natio0nwide instantly refunded me everything and sent letter to CWH

Sounds like very bad luck, but you might in either case it's entirely possible that the machines had been hijacked to clone cards - I'm surprised at the number of cash machines that have clearly had some kind of device removed from them at one point, even in areas with little crime and good visibility. Petrol stations are always going to be a bit of problem as well.

Main thing is to protect your PIN viciously - I'm sure they can probably get around not knowing the PIN, but you can at least make life trickier. Always cover up your hand when entering the pin, practise it with a numberic key pad on your computer so it's not really obvious where you're pushing as well.

Then of course you're back to checking the ATM before you use it - if possible use one within a bank rather than on the street.

Re: Bank Card Fraud .. AGAIN! :(

Debit card for 10 years now and no problems with it. Credit card for 8 years and again no problems, but I only use it online. I even got a call from the bank when I spent £50 at Interflora for when my Mum was ill asking if it was me who had done it, so they seemed to be on the ball. Spent £6000 on my debit card when I bought my car with chip and pin and the bank didn't bat an eyelid?

Re: Bank Card Fraud .. AGAIN! :(

Chip and Pin has one huge gaping security hole: How the hell do I know the chip reader is connected to the bank and not just logging my data?

It needs some kind of hand-shake. The chip reader first tells me a 'pin' so I know its spoke to the bank, only once I've seen that will I input my pin. Date of birth would do it, although not the most secure I guess its better than nothing.

One thing to consider, if you've been defrauded twice on the same card, someone may have your details. Best thing to do is change banks to be on the safe side.

I can beat that £6k easily, paid £9,800 off my debit card for a car - went through no questions asked.- in fact the only peron who asked a queston was me and it went along the lines of 'what the hell - please tell me they wanna check that its all real first....'

Just lately my CC provider has got on my nerves, blocking my card when I have splurges at HMV - I can see the sense in doing it although it is REALLY irritating.

Had my card blocked once in Dubai which was a complete PITA spending 24 hours there with £20 in cash.

I have had one CC cloned once, first time used as well - was on a One2One (remember them? ) top up - I know where and when it happened, Pizza Hut, Star City, Birmingham.

I was hearing that the card theft can start at the issuing centre. I think it was the Royal Bank of Scotland that had a card issuing centre in Bradford (could be wrong about the bank name) and the incidence of card details theft was sky high.
