Probably cost a lot of money to extinguish ... But then probably get the cost back if it was extracted properly. It doesn't say what type of gas it is though.
Burning for 35 years, wonder how much CO2 was released.
Here is a thought, so obviously someone chucked a match in there to set it alight. How long did they stay there before they thought, "stuff it, it ain't going out" and run off?
Got to watch that. Some bright spark will create some huge cap to harness all the thermal energy coming out, get it air lifted into place, then 10 seconds after the multi billion pound project is active, the gas will run out.
DOH!

My goodness... talk about big mistakes.
Just imagine what it would be like to be the guy who caused either of those.
They are both a massive waste of resources and in the American case the death of a community.
Nonetheless they are very interesting, hopefully they learnt something from it.
When I read about the american one it reminded me of Silent Hill
There are several coal mines on fire in china, i read an article recently that they're trying to extinguish them to get the fuel back.
It's just fuelish. Absolutely fuelish.
Just imagine the potentail billions in gas revenues thats gone up in smoke over those 35 years. I bet the person who set it alight must feel quite silly right now lol.
I mean who the hell comes up with the idea to set gas on fire? I think they are lucky they didn't get blown up.
