    Door bells...

.... so I've had my front door painted and in the process the door bell got removed - it was a pretty old one

Anyway I want a new one (well NEED a new one) so I want some advice... because the market is full of em!

I want one with a normal non annoying tone, it needs to be wireless and not eat batteries... I would ideally like it to be a traditional looking 'push button' something old like:

So I thought I'd turn to my right hand group of people and that's ye guys the HEXUS.community.

So today's task is pick DR's new door bell.

Hehe, not often that the public get to decide for the boss!

How about a bell that's wireless, but plugs into the mains? That way you won't have to replace batteries every so often (and you can disable it easily for alone time )

    Re: Door bells...

some of these look ace but unfortunately cost a lot and you'd have to run wires (however some bell boxes take bateries so you can put them on the inside of the door frame and just run a couple of feet of bell wire)

could always gut a cheaper wireless one then have it underneath a posh old one.

only need something to make the contact.

Funnily enough, we recently needed to replace our door bell because it broke. It was replaced by a cheapish wireless one.

You don't want to run a wire. Fair enough.

Was there not a wire there before?

    Re: Door bells...

I live in a old house with 2ft thick walls so running cables is a pain - my old door bell was wired through the wooden strips either side of the door - challenge is if I run a wire I don't want to see it... so nearby impossible

Looking on the B&Q site a lot of the buttons like the one you have pictured are actually wired.

    Re: Door bells...

the most important thing about a door bell is.... it should be a bell.
    Not a ring tone.

You need either a round bell
    or
a door bell that has two metal bars in it, like a xylophone, and when the door button is pushed the elctro magnet moved the striker one way for the first tone as it whacks the metal note, and then when you let go, it goes the other way and whacks the other for the other note.

They are LOUD.....so you can then muffle them a little (as I did with mine) with something inside the casing, or by taping up the holes.

But it wont be an online choice.....it'll be a visit to B&Q and Homebase etc.
