    Bye Bye Standby?

Has anyone had any experience of these?

I am thinking with the cost of energy going up some of these little devices may well help me out - I've a fair few TV's and bits 'n' bobs which sit in standby a fair bit...

    Looking at this: http://www.byebyestandby.com/byebyestandbykit.html

They can be linked to my PC using USB so I can control them all via software (Similar to X10 I believe?)

Sorry, no experience of these... but the idea sounds fantastic!

I will do some research and will probably order a couple of packs tomorrow...

    Re: Bye Bye Standby?

I've got to ask.....why not just turn them off when you leave?

I can't quite see the appeal of controlling them remotely? a oneclick (http://www.oneclickpower.com/store/) would do pretty much the same, without the hassle of registration and relying on a 3rd party external service not to vanish overnight.

    Re: Bye Bye Standby?

Yeah I thought about a OCP unit for behind the TV - but in my home office (which isn't in my house) the idea of a Bye Bye Standby with a motion sensor make sense to me - to turn off everything bar my PC

The network adapter costs an extra £50!!!

Agent, I think these will be good for the lounge to save having to manually switch off the plugs... its for the lazy

The 3 pack is £19.99 delivered on Currys, looks like the one to go for... That oneclick thing looks interesting too...

Surely powering up the PC to switch something 'fully off' from standby is going to take up more power than you would save?

Despite what the green fanatics will tell you, most modern devices on standby draw very little power. Of course it all adds up, but a PC draws quite a lot of power, certainly on start up compared to what devices on standby would.

    Re: Bye Bye Standby?

What a complete waste of money (sorry for being so blunt) So you want to save money by spending money? How many years will it take until they've repaid themselves? How much wasteful energy will be used to make these?

If you really want to save money, learn to turn the devices off at the mains, don't ever leave stuff on standby or failing that, make up a small switch set-up that sits between the mains and the devices. See you've saved money on electricity and you've got a bit more money left in your wallet

Not if your PC is already on 24 hours a day, folding

You don't have to power up the PC to switch anything off... that is what the remote is for
Its nothing fancy really... it just allows you to turn things off at the mains using a remote control...

The one David linked seems to be specifically for online use, although there are others.

Ah, I meant the remote controlled one... but even the ones that David linked to can be controlled by remote, so you don't have to turn your PC on...
Looks like you can do it with your PDA/phone too, so no need to turn PC on even if you don't have a remote...

Yeah, but if thats the case, why not just go for the non online version and save money?

I suppose people would only buy the online version if they are going to use it?

Hmm... it looks like it could be x-wave based

I've said in another thread things like this are going to be flying off shelves quicker than the bargain section at a Next sale as people like to be able to control everything and also save money in the process.

Yup, that is the one I am looking at... but I am now looking at the TV version of the oneclick you mentioned... I reckon it will be better as I can integrate that with the harmony remote...
