    So, who can guess why they're different? We'll make it easier by pointing out that the new design allows for the previously-mentioned Airflow Fan to be attached, but the modules do more than just that...

    My guess:

    The new modules have 3 screws allowing the top part of the heatsink to be removed. This will enable the new optional "fan heatsink" to be screwed on (with thermal paste if desired) for maximal heat transfer and efficient operation. The old modules don't have any screws so it would be hard to efficiently mount the new cooling fans onto them and achieve the same cooling results.

    The screws are resistors that allow you to manually increase the voltage.
