Buying a Vacume cleaner

Well we need a new one, have done so for a while since the dyson died last summer, 3 months after the 5year warranty ended

However the perental units have kindly given us £150 to get a new one as a xmas present
While I'd love to spend it on a new monitor I don't think that would go down too well

So what I need is some sudgestions for a good, bagless, cylinder (ie not an upright) vacume cleaner that costs under £150

Other half still wants another Dyson even after the last one died, but they are a bit pricey and the current bottom of the range, the DC19, is just over £150 (£170 on amazon with free delivery)

So any sugestions? or good places I can go looking for info on what is a good one to get?

The trick with dysons is too service them well, they last a lot longer that way.

A filter change too can restore them to like new functionality. Think of it this way, £20 a year isn't bad at all for a good vacume cleaner.

Please don't spend that much on something that sucks up crap.

Ermm a sensible suggestion. a good alrounder? VAX V-020 can be used to wash carpets and as a bagless just to vacuum normally. Plus at 80 quid you have cash left for something useful.

My last VC (not the mil service type!!), Sainsburys 25quid bagless cylinder. only bad points are that it rolls a bit easy and can switch it's self off. Also quality of foot switch for raising and lowering brushes on head is a not great, but it has a stainless steel shaft and does the job.

Opps Correction on the VAX, you need to get a standard head with it as well to use as normal VC.

I'll remember that this time, but I don't think a new filter will put the magic smoke back into our dead one or get rid of the nasty burney smell.

I would have a go at replaceing the motor myself but to take it apart you need to get to 4 screws and two of them are impossible to get to without a special screwdriver
(They are star slot torc screws which can only be reached by a continious thin shaft at least 8" long, ie not a screw driver with an interchangable head)

Miele do not make a bagless one. one of the first brands I looked at after Dyson
I wouldn't mind so much but otherhalf, demands it.

EDIT: On laminate I think broom and occainional mop works best

Miele > all. Seriously, the only thing that I've known can top them is a good ole' Henry and believe me I've been through a lot of hoovers.

And whatever you do, don't buy a Dyson. Brilliant to start with, absolutely naff after a couple of years. No loss of suction my arse.
