I find it's a combination that works, if you keep the chips out of the gravy, and dip them in it just before eating. Then you get the benefit of the taste, without the sogginess. But soggy chips? I agree, not for me.
Who would have guessed that eating chips could be elevated to an art form, eh?

no no no guys - I meant chips, cheese AND gravy... perfect drunkards food - the gravy melts the cheese, which holds the chips on the silly polystyrene tray a very tasty winnar
