I'd also suggest Neil Gaiman
Sandman, Anansi boys, American Gods and particularly Neverwhere.
Dig out the Enders Game by Orson Scott Card, another excellent read.

Currently about 10 books in the Ender series - if you include the 4 books from the "Shadow" series.
Worth reading the original "Ender's Game" and "Ender's Shadow" before the others...
off topic - bravo Terry!

Id avoid anything by Neal Stephenson unless you are an insomnic ive never read so many pages where nothing happens. Really boring (but after reading the whole thread is seems most people rate his work. Maybe his books are a bit too intelligent for moi)
My suggestion would be Hunters Run - George R R Martin and 2 of his colleagues. Good page turner and kreepy in a strange kina way, good adventure book with a sci fi slant
Permanently confused
I highly recommend Watchmen. Quite topical considering the film is out soon. I can guarantee the book will be far superior though!
For something completely different you should try The Letters of Noel Coward. An extremely interesting book that you can read from cover to cover or just dip into.
An Atlantean Triumvirate, Ghosts of the Past, The Centre Cannot Hold
The Pillars of Britain, Foundations of the Reich, Cracks in the Pillars.
My books are available here for Amazon Kindle. Feedback always welcome!
...just read fahrenheit 451 - Ray bradbury...very good book if you're into your sci fi; also Richard Dawkins - The God Delusion is a cracker : )
I reccomend these books:
Non fiction:
Freakonomics
The logic of life
Almost like a whale
A modern History of Britain (Andrew Marr)
A short history of nearly everything
Non fiction's all well and good, but if you're like me and you read on your commute it can be a bit hevy first thing in the morning and after a full days work, so you might want something a bit easy going, in which case fiction reccomendations:
JPod
Microserfs
The Gum thief
All red dwarfs
PJ Tracey books (throw away half decent thrillers)
In the post today I got:
Nuromancer
Red Dwarf - Backwards
Watching on eBay / recently added to Amazon wish list:
Huxley! - virtually all books!
Catch 22
