I'd suggest this book to anyone with a pulse. Anyone.

It is the best book I've read for a loooong time, and it has the most incredible way of defining how long ago things were.

It's joint written by Henry Allingham and another chap who add historic details in between paragraphs.

It has held me spell bound, it's intriguing, intelligent, and so perfectly written as to bemuse my sense of crititque. I can think of no other book to suggest my dear chap. It is a life times reading, and yet it flies by.

    The Mastership Game

The early Terry Brooks books were good too - easier to read LOTR style stuff.

In a similar vein , "The last fighting Tommy" is a very good read.

Maybe he appeals more to unsophisticated book readers like me. I have read maybe 5 books in the past 8 years or so!

I did think Angels and Demons was very similar to Da Vinci Code too IIRC (read them both years ago).... a lot of recycled ideas there

I hope you have plenty of free time then! I've read the first 2 and the 3rd has been sitting on my bookshelf for some time now whilst I read some errr shorter books. Much shorter books. They are a seriously good read though, and as we are experiencing the current banking crisis they offer an interesting insight in to how the modern system of banking and finance was started. They are historical novels and as well as the area of finance they are full of science and maths (or "Natural Philosophy"), swashbuckling adventure, romance, political intrigue, and lots of vagabonds.

    Re: I need a book!

Any Discworld book. 'Mort' is a good place to start in my opinion. The first 3 books in the series don't have the same feel as the rest. They're excellent, but I think that Terry Pratchett was still fleshing out his ideas for the first few books. Personally I started with 'Reaper Man' and it's still one of my favourites, along with 'Thief of Time'.

As a standalone book I would definitely recommend 'Good Omens' by Terry Pratchett and Niel Gaiman. I've lost count of how many times I've read this book.
