I took a straw poll at the pub last night..
G/f's company has to be notified of server name changes by clients for licensing purposes -
over the last two weeks about 30 large scale clients have been renaming all their servers with LoTR references! I wonder what their management would think of it (i.e people like BT, DT, American Trouser Inc. (such a cool name even when I'm sober!))

At work we use bird names, although its a bit naff there are lots of them and you can 'scale' them depending on its job

falcon, osprey, kestrel, eagle...

Easy to spell, and a wide range....
