    gaining weight

    Opposite to elmos thread.

For the life of me I cannot put any weight on, i'm almost 21, 5'10" and I weigh about 9stone.

Aside from eating more and doing less, is there anything I can do to put a bit of meat on my bones? Weight gain drinks? Do they exist?

    Re: gaining weight

wouldnt worry too much about it, i was 11 stone 4 lbs, and 6'4" at 21, and for a considerable time afterwards too.

Weight Training will put on muscle, which is heavier than fat, but otherwise, dont fret.

I don't know how it works out off the top of my head. But I think you want to looking at BMI as a guide for health.
But any weight you want to put on should be muscle. Why not go to a gym and see what they can do for you?

    Re: gaining weight

Weight gaining drinks do exist, as a couple of my mates used to use them (in conjustion with going to the gym though). This website Gaining Weight seems like a good start for you. However, don't get too used to eating lots and getting away with it; from personal experience it does catch up with you eventually (but not for few years)!

    Re: gaining weight

Or go to the gym loads and bulk up.

I saw a program a while back, I think it was on BBC3, wher two guys spent a few weeks seeing who could put on the most weight. Once guy trained every day, th other sat on his ass and ate junk.

The guy who trained weighed more at the end. It wasn't scientific though, so take it with a pinch of salt. (that ads flavour too)

I had the same issue. Pizza, beer and Team Fortress 2 sorted the problem. Too well if you ask my girlfriend!

    Re: gaining weight

Gaining weight isn't a problem, the problem is gaining in the RIGHT places. You have to eat loads (correct food still applies really, don't just go out your way and eat like kebabs or pizzas all the time because you will bulk up in other areas as well, which are not desirable) but you then have to convert all those calories into muscle, so gym.

There are weight gain supplements, but you should always eat a balanced diet. Go to a gym, have a look at some of the more built guys there, if a trainer who is quite muscular ask him whats the best way to do it, and how for you. Look for someone who practises what they preach in other words.

Its quite funny, my mate is a body builder, whenever we have a get together gaming day, off we trot to Tesco. He puts in the jaffa cakes, M&M's, crisps etc and I come back with apples, bananas, water ... Opposite ends, he burns off so much just doing nothing he has to maintain a calorific intake. Me, I'm trying to loose weight so can't always eat all the stuff he does!

Quite a lot of muscular people are just genetically gifted (don't want to make racial stereotype here, but I am sure you can guess one ). What works for them, may not work for you. I know people who have got huge with a 6 pack on a diet high in KFC

The best way to do it (both diet and training) is:
    1) Do you own research. Learn the facts and theories. The stronglifts site I linked to above is a good place to start. Other sites worth reading: T-Nation, muscletalk forums
    2) Try and find out what works for you. Different things work for different people
    3) With consistency and commitment you will eventually hit your goal

I'm in a similar position, I'm about 5'7" and 60kg. BMI works out about 20 I think, not quite classed as underweight.

Something from SiM's link made a good point:
Skinny guys often say they can eat anything they want without gaining weight. They think they’re blessed with a fast metabolism. They’ll say: “I make women jealous with my metabolism. I can eat junk food all day without gaining weight”.

Truth is you can eat anything you want without gaining weight because you’re not eating a lot. I know you think you do, but you’re not. Otherwise you wouldn’t be skinny.
I have tried monitoring my calorie intake over a period of time but I always end up missing a couple days then giving up. Last time I managed 4 days and it averaged 2200 calories, although that was with 1 day being 1640, and the next being 3043 so I'm not exactly consistent I'll have to try and do it over a longer period some time.
I don't mean to sound cold, or cruel, or vicious, but I am so that's the way it comes out.

    Re: gaining weight

I don't buy that quote to be honest. One lonely Christmas I was bored and I ate a whole turkey with an entire loaf of bread (wholemeal because it's healthier ). That was dinner. I had breakfast and lunch, and anyone who know me for any period of time would say the same thing: I always eat twice as much as most adult and typically more than people twice my weight. So if I am not eating a lot.. everyone else are eating peanuts.

For what it's worth though, my body weight is fairly constant these days and I am not skinny - more or less where I should be (in that sense I should be, and am glad - I am also keeping in mind that this may change with age). During puberty though I had to hog 6 servings each meal just to maintain my weight (everyone else was having 1-3, even the biggest guys wouldn't go up to 5 day in and day out). My weight would crash overnight if I skipped one meal. I won't say how much because anyone would believe the truth, and by now unverifiable.. but let's just say that it became such an issue that I ended up seeing a doctor and nutritionist who couldn't figure out anything wrong with me.

The problem occurs when I want to put on quality weight once I start going to the gym. When that happens, I tend to watch what I eat, and I find it hard to get the quantity of calories I need when I am also trying to eat healthy. Oh, and it also get bloody expensive.

    Re: gaining weight

It is said that to lose weight, you should train more and eat less: to gain weight, train hard and eat more - as has been said, you need to gain mmuscle, and that means eating protein and carbohydrate, and exercising to build up muscle bulk.
