Re: New Top Gear Series: 21st June

Last night's episode could have been ANY Top Gear episode.

Buy an old car for £X. Clarkson buys a tatty Porsche 944.
    Drive somewhere.
    Bump into May's car.
Do the final, ultimate challenege in which you don't make a point of anything.

The Jaguar XJR "review" was the usual. Drive sideways with lots of tyre smoke, and ultimately don't tell us anything about the car.

Star in a reasonably priced car. Clarkson tells the guest about how very fast their lap was, despite finishing in the bottom third.

They keep saying about how many "torques" the cars have, which is annoyingly dumb.

Clarkson's thing with the greenhouse just seemed like a pointless excuse to break something. The bit in the studio where he showed there were "zero carbons" - You could see the pipes from the exhaust were kinked, so it's quite likely there was zero anything coming out of it.

This whole series is unbelievably dumb.

Last nights episode was a bit samey, but isn't that the point of Top Gear? They have a winning formula as described above and they stick to it, its what we expect and why we watch!

Its like The A-Team (Lol), Bones, House and all other TV programmes, they can't change the formula too much or viewers won't know what to expect and therefore are less likely to tune in!

Thats my view on it at least! ;-)

Re: New Top Gear Series: 21st June

why? i dont want to watch someone talking about how good the fuel economy of a car is, or how practical it is and comfortable it is for their kids blah blah. there have been shows like that and they just arent worth watching. if you are looking for a new car wheres the first place you look? a tv show? i dont think so.. top gear is an entertainment/clarkson show where they break things and do silly things that can enthusiasts would love to do if they had the time and money. wouldnt you like to go ice racing in a rear wheel drive car? sounds good to me!

i think a lot of people are expecting new things over and over. i personally like the format the way it is now and dont see why they would change it. apart from the star in a car thing, i always skip that :-)

+1 for this series of Top Gear fails

The 'torques' thing is ridiculous. I watch the interview with the star if I like the guest but I skip the lap and the studio backslapping section afterwards.

What you've described in the first few lines is Top Gear from 2001 until around 2006, at which point it became more about the challenges and less and less about the cars.

'Old' Top Gear (the 90's one) was all about the cars.

Previously 'New' Top Gear was about cars with a healthy dollop of (genuinely funny) entertainment.

Current Top Gear is an all-out entertainment show. And damn is it suffering now that they're struggling massively for ideas.

The army segment the previous Sunday was cringeworthy. It was just tanks take 2 (previously shown in series 6, ep 1). The £1,500 challenge from Sunday has been done countless times now, and while Sunday's was better than most of the recent ones, it is, as has been pointed out, just all the same now, with May's car being crashed into, someone getting lost, etc.

I'm not really understanding this dislike for Topgear
All i'll say is in my opinion it's a great show, and is a must watch for pretty much everyone i know and is one of the main topics of conversation of a Monday morning at work.
A poor Top gear show is still a damn good watch and entertaining. It may seem to be an unpopular view on the internet but everywhere else it seems pretty popular

My sentiments exactly, I must have missed all the bad points this series because I've found it all very entertaining and interesting to watch. I've probably laughed more this series than I have at other series, which is either good or bad depending on the car review:entertainment ratio you prefer but in my opinion, it's all good.

The other week when James May was on Friday Night With Jonathan Ross, they claimed that it had a worldwide audience of 350 million people, but it would be interesting to see the UK viewing figures for the this series compared to the last few. One thing I've noticed is how big the in studio crowd is - I remember there being only a handful in Series 1 but now they're packed in like sardines!

Oh of course. The problem is that now they're quickly running out of ideas, the solution is out there - the recipe that got it the following it now has. Cars are getting released all the time, so while the entertainment bit might be a bit 'samey', the entire show won't be a case of deja vu.

The other problem with Top Gear currently is the reliance on scripted jokes and incidents. The caravan fire a couple of a series ago. The greenhouse last week. The rigged space-shuttle explosion. The convertible Renault Espace. The 5 laps to change tyres in the Britcar (which was otherwise a fantastic piece). Little things that are so blatantly obvious (perhaps other than the space-shuttle scene) you have wonder who they're acting them out for.

Top Gear is still one of the best shows on TV, but it had and still has everything at its disposal to be far and beyond most other TV... they just need a hot iron up their backsides to look back and see what made it what it is.

Re: New Top Gear Series: 21st June

Had no idea the shuttle was rigged. I would have thought it would be more impressive if it actually worked. Not only that, but how pissed off would you be working on it, only for it to blow up deliberately?

I must admit, it's not quite as satisfying knowing it's all scripted, although I do think there are genuine improvised moments in the series (going by the way they react to some things). Still enjoyable and watchable though.

Re: New Top Gear Series: 21st June

I have to say, I used to really enjoy Top Gear, but the last couple of series have been a bit samey and predictable.

A refresh is needed for it to continue I'd say.

And what's with Hammond's hair? Looks like a miniature surprised Richard Madely.
