    Re: I hate government

I'd prefer that they encouraged the companies owning the current infrastructure (not the little ISPs, but BT Wholesale/Virgin etc) to invest into the infrastructure. They don't want to do it now because of the cost, but if they're all required to put 10% of turnover (or something to that effect) into furthering the infrastructure then it'll cause a price hike all round. It's not like basic internet access is expensive at the moment.
I don't mean to sound cold, or cruel, or vicious, but I am so that's the way it comes out.

That's the same thing isn't it? The cost would just be passed onto existing customers and we'd see a similar increase.

Similar, it's just I don't trust the government to make good use of the money, and I don't think 50p a month is enough to provide significant changes.

    Re: I hate government

When you consider how shockingly backwards the UK's infrastructure is compared to many countries that are considered less developed, it's clear that massive investment is required.

I think that 50p/month/connection would raise only a couple of hundred million per year max, though. Several billions are actually required. Of course, this is all the direct fault of the Tories for privatising BT in the first place.

Perhaps they need it for sheep shearing videos on youtube? Or watching gardener's world on iplayer?

The perspective is that I pay a crap load of tax, and the government manages to mismanage huge chunks of it. So understandably I resent every single time a new tax appears on the horizon. THAT's my perspective.

I'll discuss this later, after I've been to my mum's house to shovel some more coal into her steam-powered modem.
