Bought a 12000 BTU unit a couple of years back. Cranked it up today for the first time this summer. It's bliss, I'd really recommend one.

Well the last 5 or 6 days have been a nightmare up here in Scotland. I have recently had my brother install a celing fan for my living room and one for my bedroom. They haven't even made a dent in the heat or humidity. I bought some bread and put it in the bread bin for later and a couple of hours later went to make a couple of sarnies - bleeding bread was literally COOKED and went straight in the bin. Had to turn up the fridge to full whack and the contents of my freezer started thawing ...
I live in a top floor flat with 4 large windows getting the full pelt of the sun for the hottest parts of the day ... so decided Air Con was the only way to go and bought this:

just need my brother to set it up for me (I am hopeless with these things lol) and the one I bought (from another seller) doesn't seem to have the Nanomax feature that saves you having to empty any excess water as it is discharged through a seperate nossle in the hose as mist ... It looks the part though and is A Rated plus nice and small at only 22kg.
Will send my report on how it performs tomorrow (If I don't die of heat stroke tonight).
I was in the same boat and kept using this argument against myself every year to not buy one but in the end I figured what the heck, at least it's there now to use every year as soon as the heat gets silly. No more having to suffer and wish I'd bought one.
And if the boffins are right, we'll be seeing more and more of this 'lovely' weather in years to come so bring it on I'm ready for it now
Well I have to say I am not impressed with this unit. I have had it on full blast for about 3 hours now and the temperature according to the air con. has only dropped 3 degrees from 30 to 27 degrees. I have it set to try and achieve its lowest setting (18 degrees) but I don't see it ever being capable of that and this is with the fan set at full and the compressor on full blast.
Does it look like I have got a dodgy machine??
Hi the room, is only roughly about 6m x 4m and it gets a fair amount of sun. But truth be told it hasn't been as warm or sunny (been raining off and on) all day. Certainly no chance of this air con reaching the desired temperature that I have dialled in though as it is still at 27 degrees.
I am a newbie to these systems so just took it that I would select a temperature and the machine would try and achieve that ... but I could be way wide of the mark.
thanks
dc.
Remember that to be effective the room needs to be virtually sealed off. Close the door so that no hot air is coming in and make sure the window is sealed up around the vent. The unit needs to treat only the air in the room and not be pulling warm air in from other sources.
Ok thanks for the replies, I have tested the air con unit again today and took all the advise on board:
I made sure the living room door was closed (I had previously left the door open to hopefully cool my bedroom lol, guess I shouldn't have).
The ambient room temperature was 26 degrees so after running the machine with everything on full whack compressor and fan and after 2 and a bit hours the temperature had dropped to 24 degrees.
Now I am no expert on these things but having the temperature drop a lousy 1 degree an hour (according to this thing) with everything on full blast just doesn't seem right ... I was certainly hoping for something way better than that performance.
Also just measured the room and it is 3m x 6.5m so not a big room (could barely swing a cat in it at the best of times).
Anybody with a similar unit care to offer up what sort of temperature drop I should be getting or is this pretty much the norm??
thanks guys.
it should be better than that, contact the seller.
