    Re: Air conditioners

    Air cooler != Air con.

If you want a cheap air cooler, they start at £25-30 I believe (air con starts at £90).

They are the ones with water in them which passes the air over it to cool it down. Have to change the water frequently though.

    Re: Air conditioners

Hex bought one on Monday - a 12000 BTU Air Conditioner.

I am in love with it. And am very jealous of the chinchillas, whose present it is!

The window fitting you get with it effectively closes the window gap so thats not the case.

When the generator kicks in it is quite loud.
This only last for about 10-15 minutes though. Once the room is at the temperature set, the generator switches off and the fan just pushes the colder air around.

    Re: Air conditioners

I brought a second hand Rowenta Compact Line 2200 Air Conditioner unit off eBay for around £20 odd delivered last year and it's still going strong if not quite noisy, although I'm now gonna have to buy the one off Scan to cool the pc room as the fan i've got does FA.

Are those the same as what they call evaporative coolers?

I was going to get one of those last year seeing as they don't need exhaust hoses, but didn't contemplate the effect of slowly increasing the humidity in the room - obviously not a good idea unless you live in a very dry climate.

Don't bother as imho they are crap, if you can afford it then I highly recommend a proper Air Con unit, having owned both types the Aircon unit is tons better than the water cooler. As for the exhaust holes, I've got my aircon unit right next to the window with the pipe going out the window, I haven't ever felt any hot air come back through the window from the exhaust pipe facing down.

    Re: Air conditioners

I am tempted to get one, but then I saw the weight. Is 35kg typical of a 'portable' A/C? I didn't expect to be able to just swing it on my back when I need to move, but that's still pretty heavy to move around the room.

    Tell me about it!
The word 'portable' should be used VERY loosely.

I bought the Scan one and its geting on for 50KG's
Serious struggle to lift it and i am 6ft and 15 stone so god knows how someone small would shift it.

    Re: Air conditioners

I have been thinking about getting cooling for a smallish room.

I have not a lot of money to spend. But one thing that is getting to me. How long are we going to have to stick out these temps?

I do not want to buy one only to find out that after a week this country will go back to normal and I will not need it again for another year
