Air conditioners

Alright, with the heat wave that seems to be engulfing the country recently (or at least my part of it), and the fact that I'm currently in a pool of my own sweat....

I wondered if anyone has any recommendations for an air conditioner?
I'm not looking for an entire system to be installed, just a small(ish) portable one, reasonably priced and preferably not too noisy.

Theres that one thats always on scan. We have a dehumidifier somehwere, gonna have to dig it out methinks.

The one i bought that Mike linked to is a beast.

Also, its cheap compared to whats out there.

The problem with portable air conditioners is that you have a very large hose which has to be put out a window, or you drill a hole in the wall. This is for the hot air to escape. So what you end up with is a window open letting in more hot air. They are counter productive if they are set up in such a way. Plus they can be noisy.

In my experience, the air con has more effect than the open window so it still cools the room down nicely - although it will be less efficient...

I'm sat in my room with the curtains drawn. With me PC on it is turning into and oven. I opened the curtains a little by the open parts of it and cool air comes in.

On an evenings like this I reckon I could get away with 2 Small fans. One on each window on the window sill just to suck the cold air into my room.

All depends on the room. Mine is west facing and has two outside walls. It cooks from the afternoon and evening sun. So an open window doesn't really do anything plus I hate all the little flies which come in! Thankfully got a proper system in place. Before that a big fan with a remote control so I didn't even have to move if I got hot!

and just when i was goind to start an aircon thread of my own up
i got an air con but i think it's on it's last legs, it's about 5+ years old and it's not keeping my room cold at all, do you guys (and girls) thinks i should get it service or just bin it and get a new one ?
it's a homebase portable one.
