Try googling BLACK TOOTH GRIN. I cannot do links on me MOB. I think that is made with whiskey
If it's too strong for you to drink neat, find another drink, no point forcing yourself to drink something you don't like.
I used to love JD, now, as with cider, even the smell of it makes me heave.
You could drink it on the rocks, a bit of melted ice mixed in will make it a bit less strong and being cold the alcohol evaporates less in your mouth making it easier to drink without spluttering.
Otherwise yeah, JD and coke is delicious.
Ginger ale + jack daniels, you will be surprised how much jack you can get in without tasting it
Ironically I'm busy drinking JD myself after a crappy day at work
Personally I like whiskey so I drink it straight up on the rocks. Absolute best cola to mix it with is Virgin Cola which unfortunately is nigh on impossible to find. Cherry Cola also works nicely, or if you can find a cheap but sweet cola.

This is bunny and friends. He is fed up waiting for everyone to help him out, and decided to help himself instead!
JD is unlike proper whisky, its more like sothern comfort.
Mixing it with anything that has a very strong flavour is probably for the best.
In the summer time, ginger beer goes quite well, as can Horchata (milk + cinamon).

I love JD, though I hate Southern Comfort (it's like drinking boiled sweets!) and am not a big fan of most whiskies either. Whisky snobs will deride people like me but I don't care!
I quite like JD neat but prefer it with a bit of Coke and with some ice as it makes it go further in the pub. As mentioned, lemonade works too.
You can mix anything with it really, it's like Jagermeister, lots of different combinations that work sooooo well
Try:
Coke
Lemonade
Cranberry (just a splash)
Ginger ale
Ice tea
Cinnamon
But if you don't like it neat, then don't buy it, unless you love something mixed with it
