Hmm. I think I recognise the bad-hats from old Dr. Who episodes. Either way, who cares? This series is excellent.

I think it was a great idea to bang it all out inside a week, as it keeps up the pace without having to cram it with explosions or surprises. I am going to recommend it to my (English-speaking) foreign colleagues, and I think that they will thank me.

Re: Torchwood - Children of Earth

So did all the children die horribly or will I have to put up with an additional 10% of the little brats running around on Saturday morning?

Re: Torchwood - Children of Earth

I' was a big fan of the relaunched Dr Who and Torchwood. But was really disappointed with the CoE. days 2 and 3 didn't really do anything at all. I thought from the previous Dr Who ending (not the Christmas special) that Martha Jones and Mickey Smith were brought into Tourchwood.

Anyway how come with all the other threats to Earth in the past we decide to roll over and give up to a 3 headed alien inside a glass box? Not even a fight?? What happened to the old capt Jack of the past against the Darleks?

I really wanted to like this series (if 5 episodes can be called a series) but i feel cheated. It could have been done over an extended 2 parter really. And why are the BBC killing off a series that is obviously doing well and has a good following? I don't think Barrowan is coming back for another series. I just don't get it, I know they're expensive to make but you get huge audiences and money from franchises.

I'm not holding out for the new Dr Who series either. i think they roll out 1 series and then kill it. I don't think the Beeb have the commitment anymore.

They were meant to be in it but had other commitments

Re: Torchwood - Children of Earth

I've not been a big fan of the new Dr Who or Torchwood. In particular I find the overblown story arcs where everybody on the planet seems to know what's going on tiresome and unconvincing and there simply isn't the budget to make it look right.. for this stuff to work it needs to be more like The X-Files was.. in the shadows.. at least that's my opinion. I know stuff like this has happened in the Dr Who past but I thought it would be good to downplay it more in the news series...

However; I watched the ending last night and I actually quite enjoyed it. I liked the dreadfully mundane reason the 456 wanted the kids for and I thought the decision to get Jack to do what he did at the end took balls, especially to stick with it. That said, I'm not sure it'll be possible to ever have character sympathy for him again..

Re: Torchwood - Children of Earth

I've really been enjoying CoE, although I haven't seen the last episode yet. The 'Wannsee conference' scenes were especially fascinating. I actually think this is a very plausible scenario. Not the aliens coming part, but the response of government. The concept that the bottom 10% by education standard should be sacrificed was a nice touch, although the show seemed to suggest I should be horrified by that idea. It's the only logical method of selection.
The bigger issue was the same cynical idea that you can't trust your elected representatives to do the right thing, and how important it is not to allow them to take away your right to stop them.

Re: Torchwood - Children of Earth

I was really let down by the ending.

Were we supposed to believe that jack has grown through his recent experiences, and that his lack of caring in the 1960's has led to a new 'an injury to one is an injury to all' philosophy. Or was it that he's finding exactly how bad that philosophy is?

Either way, we find our supposed hero executes a child without even agonizing about it. It was no kind of ending. From a story perspective, I think it would have been better if the aliens had taken the kids.

Why would no-one fight? Is everyone really so anxious to kill their own families?

It made no sense from another perspective either. While the UK government might get away with such an act of democide, I can't imagine soldiers being quite so successful at kidnapping children from a US housing estate. As such, with the alien unwilling to compromise on numbers, a war would be inevitable anyway.

Re: Torchwood - Children of Earth

I may have thrown a small hissy fit at the conclusion of this.

I loved Torchwood, and there's no way there'll be another series. Bugger bugger bugger. AND I'm not overly impressed with the New Doctor actor either...
