how to ask next door to keep the volume down.

ok so we have been living here for 7 months, the lady next door is retired and lives on her own.

we don't speak much but are on talking terms. here is the problem.

she is as deaf as a post and sits there at night getting pissed and has the TV as high as it can go.

we have put up with this due to single glazing. as of today our house now has double glazing and what do you know, i can hear her telly even though im sat with mine on with the volume quite high.

now it isnt like some tossy little kids blaring the stereo out of an open window, but the volume is so loud its coming through the walls. the houses are detached and its bridging the 2 meter gap between us. its like sitting next to a ipod, not loud but bloody annoying

its worst when we go to bed and have work the next day, all i can assume is she got pissed and passed out with the telly on, i spend a good hour or so with the tinny tv noise coming through the walls until i fall asleep, the next day im a bear with a sore head thanks to her next door.

so after that little rant, how do i go about wording things when i knock on her door in the next few days ?

is has to stop for my sanity but i really dont want to fall out with her.

i can no longer hear cars going up the road but ican still here her tv

would be nice if the replys were serious

Ask her politely. Explain your situation. Post results.

Buy her some headphones. Tell her the noise is too loud and tell her to wear them.

LOL i did think of the headphone route.

it will be fun. she doesnt turn the Tv down when she comes to the door so you stand there shouting at her anyway

Re: how to ask next door to keep the volume down.

As you say you're on talking terms, how well do you know her & what her situation is.. like do you know if she already has hearing aids etc, does she have family or health workers that call & so on. Might be worth doing some groundwork first here. Maybe make your next few encounters all positive, ask how she is, do her a favour or something, then it will not be like one complaint straight off & she would (probably) be more receptive. Not saying you have to get too friendly as neither of you might want that, but it's worth getting on some sort of footing - you never know, she might have plans to move, or she might have a dicky ticker & you don't want any nasty outcome to it all. What do other neighbours think if relevant. (How old is she anyway, very elderly or barely-just-retired age?)

Bear in mind the drink & tv might be more or less all she's got & life is not much cop for many elderly folk, though can see how it's a real pain for you to live next door to; other people's noise is a nightmare (speaking as an ex nightclub next door-ee).

Re: how to ask next door to keep the volume down.

I would go talk to here face to face! You say she lives on her own but does she have any children you know of, or maybe a friend you could speak to?? The reason i ask about any children or friends is that they could (or maybe you) suggest she goes to see an audiologist (my dad is one)

Maybe offer to help in some way by getting her the hearing help she clearly needs.

    Good luck!!

Re: how to ask next door to keep the volume down.

she is in her 60's, far from senile and kids all flown the nest.

never really see anyone round there and with us having the corner plot its not like we walk outside and meet on the driveway so its hard to tell when she does have friends.

so i can rule out talking to friends or family and direct contact is the only way.

i have no reason to offer to do anything as its all going to seem a little strange tbh.

might be able to pop round to ask if i can put the ladders on her yard when i go to repaint the side of the house next to hers, may bring it up then

yeah that sounds like the kind of thing without being weird 60s sounds quite young to be deaf as a post - maybe it's not just an age thing. Doesn't seem like she is going anywhere though so there is no getting round it, good luck

Sneak in one day when she is out and put the AVLS on to 2 or something.

Suggest she buy some headphones, perhaps wireless ones ? Then she can blast herself silly and not bother you
