Knock the door and explain the problem. Leave her with a bunch of flowers or box of chocolates with a little note thanking her for understanding that the noise is keeping you awake (just in case she doesn't understand you properly when you knock the door).

The flowers/chocolates are because she's alone, elderley, deaf and probably thinks of you as people she could turn to in a crisis. It would also be a very nice touch likely to make more impact on someone in her circumstances and will act as a reminder of your visit (elderley people forget quickly!).

Be nice. Be neighbourly. When you come away from her front door she will still be living where she lives; you need a poistive outcome not a turf war. If you have to take things further, the gift shows you made the right kind of first approach .
this sounds like very sound advice..
it also seems that Santa is a genuinely nice dude

Re: how to ask next door to keep the volume down.

A friend of mine got so annoyed with the people above them when he lived in a flat making noise that he hired in a PA system early in the morning after they had had a big party.

Set it up in his lounge, bedroom and bathroom with all the speakers pointing up and even ran another speaker up to their front door.

Cranked it up as loud as he could, plugged in a minidisc of Barry manlow and played it while he sat there with ear plugs on.

Within about 30 secs he had the owner out apologising, never did it again he said. But it could have gone really wrong.

Re: how to ask next door to keep the volume down.

Actually had this exact same problem myself a couple of years ago. The neighbour, like yours was hard of hearing, and although the flats were adjoining the insulation was pretty good. TV was usually up VERY loud though.

Knocked on the door, explained the problem to the chap and asked if there's anything I could do. Turned out he was struggling to hear the TV with it over the other side of the room - suggested getting some speakers to plug into it that ran over by his chair. Got them, fitted them for him, and he's over the moon, 2 problems solved and a friend gained.
    Moo.

Re: how to ask next door to keep the volume down.

a guy i go fishing with from time to time had a problem with pi**heads in the flat above him he asked them to keep it down so they turned the speakers face down pointing at dougie's flat and spent weeks blasting it at 3 am he phoned the council up and they sent the people a letter saying they were coming round to investigate the noise, they kept it down for 2 weeks then started again.

Haven't been fishing for 6 months but last time i saw dougie he had been arrested by the police because threatened to put there speakers somewere ( he only got a caution but still) and he ended up having a stroke one night probably from all the stress when i saw him he was just gettting function back into one side of his face as it had gone all limp and unresponsive.

People like them above him should be shot,

Your problem seems less bad just tell the old dear to cool it down or whack on system of a down at full whack see if she really is deaf

    Hi There !!

You can go and talk with her very calmly and very nicely. You should convince her and explain the situation.

    Hope it helps

Useless response pcup, he is trying to resolve the situation nicely and in a pleasant manner, not in a manner that could cause more problems.
