Taking Opened Whey Protein in Luggage - Okay?

So, to me, this seems not a problem (in the luggage compartment not hand luggage), but.

    A) It's a powder
    B) It's not factory sealed

I've looked at many threads on other sites and it seems to be fine with others (mainly in the UK), but I don't want to take my £35 tub of Protein and then find out it's been confiscated when I land etc.

I'm leaving from Terminal 5 and going to Cairo - The tub won't be coming back.

    TIA

If it gets out of London and on to the plane then all you have to worry about is them confiscating it if you declare it in Cairo. Have you thought about calling up BAA?

Re: Taking Opened Whey Protein in Luggage - Okay?

BAA controls the airports, they're likely to have a much better idea of what's allowed through than a specific airline - the luggage control system is universal, there isn't a separate conveyor for each carrier.

Of course if you're flying with British Airways do call them too (EDIT: T5, so you are! But the point stands, BA are just a carrier, it'll be UK regulators not BA that deal with your luggage)

Actually, might be worth calling Customs and Exise - the people that tell you how much tax you have to pay on stuff, it'll be them that ultimately decide whether you can take it through. If it's just protein for muscle workout type stuff i doubt they'll have a problem with it. If it was something like activated liquid yeast they might - i.e. if it's "alive" or not.

But BAA don't control the Cairo end of it, so I still say BA is your best bet

Re: Taking Opened Whey Protein in Luggage - Okay?

Honestly, is it really worth the potential hassle? Just buy another tin and take it on sealed. Personally, for the money, I wouldn't want to risk the rubber glove treatment....

You're taking an open container of powder via an airport, something that dogs will likely bark at, and you think this is ok??

Man, I hope you pack lube!

I've done it once before and it was fine. But that was over 10 years ago, when it was presumably less strict.

So cheesy, but there's always one trying to milk the puns
My only concern is should I hide my true identity? A costume maybe?

0iD: Plus weeing in it every now & again does it good
scaryjim: 10" is just a little large to hold comfortably in one hand, which makes it a lot harder to tap, swipe and generally interact with.

    LOL Clunk

Splash out on some protein bars to take instead? They will take up less space than the tub of Whey Protein surely

Also the extra weight may make your luggage Whey too much

Re: Taking Opened Whey Protein in Luggage - Okay?

    Thanks for replies.

Yes it is worth the hassle as I'm cutting, and I need the protein.

Sealed or not sealed, A LOT of the proteins I buy online the seals break when you take the top of anyway and it looks pretty full as I've had 5-6 scoops maximum. BTW I'll put it in my case, so it'll be scanned etc, and if they want to open it, then be my guest, it'll just be a quick drug test on those machines.

Will ring these guys up and see what they say, it's basically food, and we've never had any problem taking other foods through.

Are you competing on stage as a bodybuilder soon? I am guessing no (you wouldn't be going on holiday!)... then if you are only going for a few days you won't need whey. Eat real food.
