Can someone explain to me why the EU is spending billions on the GALILEO satellite network, when the American's GPS works perfectly well & has a definite long term future?

1 Euro every 20.71 miles, ridiculous. That's an extra, I don't know, £200 a year? Don't they think motorists pay enough already

The reason that this is a good plan is it reduces the reliance Europe has on the US. It is a game of what if though, because it relies upon things like "what if we went to war with the US"

Not sure about over there, but i highly doubt we'd be given any concession over here!

If Europe ever went to war, the lack of GPS would be the least of our worries (and i know how important it is). Especially with the cut backs and 'european military' we seem to be heading towards!

Why should we rely upon the American's for everything?

Hmm, reading about it, seems like a Big Brother thing, not liking the sound of that.

That's about the same amount we pay now as fuel tax in a car averaging 40mpg (petrol). Works out as 5.3p per mile, so £1.10 for 20.71 miles.

So basically, it's a really expensive way of doing exactly the same thing that we're currently doing with fuel tax. I fail to see a single benefit of this over fuel tax, in fact it's better/worse (delete as appropriate) because it doesn't penalise people for having cars that only do 4mpg.
I don't mean to sound cold, or cruel, or vicious, but I am so that's the way it comes out.
