Bank ripped my marrgie certificate - i'm livid!

    Hello,

OK on Saturday the wife and me had to do some stuff at the bank (the one with the black horse) and change names etc since we're married now. Anywa they need to take a photocopy of the certificate.

These things are not A4 in size and don't photocopy well. Any way the desk person at the bank brings it back to us saying "it didn't photocopy well and by the way the document feeder ripped the certificate so i had to stick it together with sellotape"!!

My wife and i were in disbelief she had hold of my arm as i was seeing red at the time i wasn't hearing much and i think i was rather angry. We're married 1 year now and the certificate is a very symbolic document for us. Basically the wife looks after it like it was our baby.

I know we can get another one but that's not the point. It's the total lack of comprehension the guy had over what he did.

I've written a letter of complaint and expressing my anger over the situation to the branch manager. Not sure what else i can do really. Luckily my wife was with me at the time so i didn't shout or throw anything - i just sat there shaking with anger.

    Was not impressed at all.

The words "PUNCH. IN. FACE" is appropriate.

I think I would have done if my wife started to cry.

Why the heck would you use a document feeder with a document like that? Smacks of laziness in my opinion, I used to do a lot of photocopying for customers when I worked on the high street and I wouldn't have dreamed of risking someone's personal documents in the feeder.

While accidents do happen, by your account it does sound like the guy didn't take sufficient care of the certificate and should have been more apologetic.

I would ask for them to pay for a new certificate as a minimum.

Well i am glad you did not assault him as I am sure they would of come down quite hard on you if you did. But in all fairness the guy must of been some kind of half witt to put it through the feeder. makes you wonder were they find these people.

A replacement certificate is about £7. So it's not the cost, it's the sentimental value of the witnesses signatures and what it symbolised on that day when we both said "I do". And I know it's just a piece of paper and having it ripped up like this doesn't mean we're divorced. But I am angry about it still.

Maybe the bank operated a £50 bonus for every bit of ID they shred?

    That's easy. Try £9k p.a.

    Ouch

Could be worse - I doubt I could get a replacement for mine if I tried, given we married abroad

You can certainly try to attach a sentimental value to your compensation claim from the bank. After all, they've destroyed something that is quite literally priceless. If I were you, I'd write a complaint to your branch manager and go from there. Point out that whilst the cost of the certificate is minor, the sentimental value is huge and that the response from the staff member was completely inappropriate.

I do feel sorry for you... but it might be worth getting copies in future, one this is replaced.

    http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

When something is so important to you, a copy would have been better to have.

So... sorry for your loss but this might help someone else not suffer the same.. so it's not a deadloss
