    Confusing the Computer "Experts"

I'm sure many of us from time to time have been in a large well known PC retailler and purposely asked questions to either confuse or wind up the sales people.

My favourite was in 2003 or so to do with Graphics Cards.
I asked him why an AGP 2x card would not fit in a more modern motherboard, also saying that there seems to be a bit in the slot in a different place to the card.

Rather than give me an answer about the signalling voltage (or anything remotely relevant) the sales assistant gave me this reply along the lines of "if you think how many of these cards are made, taking that little chunk out helps them save plastic to make more"

Anyone else have some good examples?

but they fill that little space within the slot so the saved plastic isn't actually saved. so his pathetic excuse for why doesn't even make sense

I get people in trying to confuse me, but so far to date it hasn't actually worked. You have to get out of bed really early in the morning to catch me out.

Totally agree with you there. You wouldn't goto the Doctors and mock him would you when he's trying to diagnose whats wrong with you, so why do it in an electrical store.

My ex used to do it all the time, go to the local PC world store with me when I went to buy some small items which I couldn't be othered to order (and if I'm honest buying it from them was cheaper !) and ask them random stuff about laptops she knew they didn't have the answers to.

I used to walk out and leave her to it half the time, it wasn't something I enjoyed watching.

I would never try to mock or make them feel inferior, but I do occasionally question them when they something quite silly, ie with the hdmi thing. 90% of the time I would normally just ignore them.

P.S. If my GP said take a foot cream for my sore throat, I would be tempted to say something

    Re: Confusing the Computer "Experts"

It WAS something that was a laugh... it's just tiresome mocking someone who is paid to do a job and doesn't know because their training is for real customers.

How about I go into McDonalds and mock them for not being able to say which part of the body or where their meat products come from. It's not something they really need to know for their job... so dont.

Even I work in sales and I have to agree with you pn the HDMI cables, that said a decent SCART cable does help smoothe things out alot, but I for the life of me can't work out why a HDMI cable is nearly £80, it's a digital signal.

You gotta remember, they are trying to sell you stuff. They aren't likely to say to go buy a HDMI cable from ebay if they think they can get you to buy one from them at £20 quid plus!

I've told people before they are better off buying a 15 metre run of cat5 ethernet cable off the net, amazon etc. £49.99 for a bog standard cable, whatever the colour is very expensive !
