nope, thats because we get on...its also because everyone in the store seems to talk about other people behind there back....minus the oldys and a few others. trying to talk to her would be alright if it wasnt so damn hard....ive tryed that approach before and she tryed to make me feel guilty! however i will try again monday...

slightly extreme, but i'm willing to guarantee that if you foul yourself in work, just the once, you'll never be asked to justify your toilet breaks again
if it ain't broke...fix it till it is

Re: do i have to tell work im going loo?? honestly...

    Funny thing, work.

There was this girl working behind the bar at my local who was at Uni and she asked what to look out for in a job.

I told her that no matter what your qualification, no matter how good or bad you are at the job you've been assigned to earn a wage, it all comes down for the most part to one thing - people.

I have found this out the hard way through life but it's true.

Most work places are a hot cauldron of jealousy, hatred, pettiness and pure stupidity. From boardroom to factory floor, it just the same.

If people don't like you or suffer from inferiority, they will attempt to get you into trouble or get you the sack.

Or make your life so miserable at work your position will become untenable.

Why this should be I'm not entirely sure but it's a sad reflection on human beings generally.

So, when at work, keep your head down, don't volunteer information about yourself you don't have to and be formally polite to everybody. Do not gossip about co-workers.

If you're lucky and have joined a bunch of semi-decent people, you may progress.

If your co-workers are bitter and twisted then you on a hiding to nowhere. Sad but true.

Top tip! Insult your manager online, with an ID that has your real name associated.

Usually, the best anyone gets at my place of work is a gesture as someone is walking past quite quickly or a comment like "must go, I'm touching cloth!"

No, have a look then retract what you just said and i wouldn't call that an insult as such, now if i said something like "my manager is a complete DXXX" then i would be insulting him.

    ""edit""

And just to be clear you only know as i use to have the information there

for the next few days i work for virgin media, until my notice period runs out.

we have 10 mins per day (9 hour 50 min shift) to go to the toilet/get a drink or any other activity. this is timed, but we can't see the time unless we invest in a stopwatch. mobile phones are banned. the trip to the toilet includes the 2 min round trip to get there and back. if we consistantly go over this we can face losing our jobs.

For what it's worth, razer, and I didn't see this first time round, it's an area of some contention ... and essentially, interpretation.

There are basic H&S provisions in legislation that certainly could be argued to cover being able to go when you need to, since not being able to can lead to serious problems, including kidney infections and derivative problems. But there's no specific legislation, and no specific requirement for you to be able to go in company time either.

I haven't read the whole thread, but have skimmed and I agree that one way to pursue this would be via HR, but I also agree that it can backfire. It may get your cards marked as a troublemaker, and though you may not get fired, it could affect promotions, pay rises, etc, and the odds are, you'd never know it was happening, or why. So .... the first option is to explain, again, to the manager (if it was still an issue) that you need to go when you need to go, especially with IBS, and that not being able to because you can't find him/her could not only result in an unpleasant accident on the office floor, but also has medical risks attached!

If that doesn't get the manager to back off, then I'd agree that an informal approach to HR, first, would be a good idea. You know, the old "I don't want to cause trouble, but this is happening and I need help/advice ..." line.

And if that doesn't work, and assuming you're prepared to risk getting the "troublemaker" label, do it to HR in writing as a formal complaint, explain that you have a medical condition that causes issues and that you have taken up this issue with your doctor .... and do that. Find out what, medically, his/her opinion is if you need to go, because of IBS, and aren't allowed to. I certainly know of people with IBS that when they need to go, they need to go any time in the next minute, and the priority is getting there before disaster strikes, not finding a manager to get permission.

But .... it is a grey area. To the best of my knowledge, despite pressure from worker groups like the TUC, it's not yet been legally clarified.

It's good to know you don't currently have that same manager still being a pain in the .... erm, ....

Re: do i have to tell work im going loo?? honestly...

All jokes aside, I have never worked in such a workplace where toilet visits have been either monitored or permission has to be obtained, I have worked in retail logistics and when you gotta go, you gotta go,

I find that when someone cannot trust an individual within a workplace then, it is from past experience and should not be put upon other employees that they think will do the same thing,

Individual is as it is, no one is the same and should be treated as such, every eventuality should be covered for each individual.
