heres a quick one for you...im constantly getting moaned at by my deputy manager for not asking her permision to go loo.....drives me nuts as i like anyone else in the morning will need to go loo after eating lol, so to top it of i have a horrible little thing called "ibs" very bad to say the least! so anyone back on track,

i work in a retail but not on the shop floor, i work out the back with 2 other lads, its just us out there, i always tell THEM where i am going as trying to get hold of the manager sometimes becomes impossible i try ringing and wont get through go on the shop floor and cannot find her so in my eyes ive told someone if she went out there they would tell her where i am fine right?? no.....when i got back from nipping to the loo i got a "what part of you need to ask me to go to the loo dont you understand?" this wound me up as im always getting crap of her she cant handle the presure since our manager left lol bless her...anyway i replyed with "since i havent really made it a habit of telling everyone im going loo" i then got told "its a health and safty regulation and LAW" whilst she waved her hands about....at this point i just said ok and got on with work and put up with her throwing stock about and having a paddy....now i would go to my manager but like ive said we dont have one, ive asked for head office's number before and she wont give it to me...ive no idea why but she will refuse everytime i ask....i also cannot find the number online so this has become a real big issue out of nothing, i mean i tell someone where i am so how is that a health and safty issue? if she asked (which my workmate told me she did and yes he told her where i was) then what is the big problem here??

p.s ive had family members overhear her talking to other staff members about me, as in slagging me of, she really doesnt like me because i answer back...not good i know but im not a kid im a worker out the back what the hell?!?!

anyone whos got any ideas/info on this matter?? thanks!

Anyway, as far as I am aware, someone has to be aware as to where you are, just incase of fire or whatever. Whether it has to be the manager or not, i dont know.

you should put in a formal written complaint to the HR department, (in writing) say you wish to file a formal greivance against your manager for harrassment, give breif details of what she is asking you to do, and why it's not always possible (ie. she isn't always around, and you have IBS), make sure you state this harrassment is causing you unnecessary stress which is affecting your mental health on top of the IBS affecting your physical health. state her name, position and store location and state that you have verbally made her aware of your health issue on more than one occasion, and state that she has refused to satisfy a reasonable request to provide you with the contact number of the head office to speak to the HR department. ask them to provide you with a written copy of the terms and conditions of your employment, along with a copy of the absence/sickness procedures, and a copy of the greivance procedure so you can make your complaint formal in line with the appropriate procedures after consulting with ACAS and CAB

that alone should make the hassle go away

if the IBS is causing these frequent trips to the toilet, obtain a note from your doctor explaining the need to (sometimes suddenly) visit the toilet.

Explain, poilitely (remember, this person is still your superior, like it or not) that owing to the above and the (now present) letter from the Dr, where possible you will inform her, but if you are unable to do so, you will always make sure someone in the room is aware of where you are.

Of course, if you're disappearing every 20 minutes for a while at a time, her insistance is understandable, it's a very common skiving trick (no insinuation intended) so she's only doing her job.

you have to bear in mind managers need to manage their staff and unless she's aware of the IBS, she won't be aware of the reason for your frequent loo visits.



Edit - re the above post, diplomacy is always the first line of attack, putting in a formal complaint is not a nice procedure and I would always suggest having a quiet word before doing so.

I would find a compromise. Yes I think it is somewhat draconian. But I do think H&S does come into it. Personally, I think telling your co-workers you are going to the loo is fire.

surely you can google it up. what company do you work for? if they have a company website or intranet you should find the info there

your manager is acting unreasonably, so much so that she's ignoring your health issues and not treating what you are telling her in an appropriate manner, thus filing a formal complaint is the next step, as you've tried and failed to resolve it informally. normally i would recommend that someone always tries to resolve a complaint informally directly with their manager, but in this case that does not appear to be the most appropriate course of action as you've tried this before, so it's time to move on to stage two by esculating the complaint

your contract of employment should have the head office address, it may be on the till receipts, it should be on some paperwork in the office. your boss surely can't be in the store 7 days a week, so when she is on a day off and someone is covering or acting up they may give you the info you need, or your fellow colleauges may have it. it may appear on your payslips, p60 and other documents. it should appear on the company letterheads and compliment slips, and possibly on the health and safety poster in the workplace and the employee liability insurance policy certificate that should be on display in the workplace

you mean the ones they got me to throw out? lol na we have only just got a new health and safty one up..which im pretty sure is not the right one, i will be in work tomoz will have to see what happens cos one moment she is nice next she is not...does not make sense! i just want a easy live to provide for my family lol, i got a letter from tk the other day....hm guess i could write to that address then?
